HGM ESSAY
In Greek mythology there are many stories that have to do with arrogance than someone, at something, or just in general with gods. In the book, Heroes, Gods, and Monsters of the Greek Myths” there are many examples of this kind of situation. In the section, Athene, is where I found the biggest example. Arachne, a girl who lived in Lydia, was so boastful she said, “I, I am the greatest weaver in the world. The greatest since the world begun, no doubt. In fact, I can weave better than Athene herself.” After she had announced this, Athene was about to kill her. Instead, she challenged her. The challenge ended with Arachne hanging herself. This is my favorite example because it shows what being conceited can get you. You don’t want to hang yourself do you? …show more content…
Another example of arrogance is in the Poseidon section.
He was so full of himself that the people of Athens did not want to belong to his kingdom, and sent a prayer to be under the protection of another god. Athene heard the prayer who then put the people in a council. Athene’s gift was better. Her olive tree gave her the town of Athens. This topic is still affecting people today. Being conceited about what you do or what you look like will get people to dislike you. You will end up in a very difficult situation. In the end, you will most likely get hurt or you will hurt others. Think before you say something because you never know who hears and what they will do. I’ve experienced this before when I was playing basketball at this park in San Francisco. There were these group of little boys that wanted to play with me and my friends. They were very boastful and full of themselves thinking that they were the best at basketball and knew everything about it. In the end, they lost and started to
cry. All in all, the greek stories were meant to teach us a lesson. Arrogance, in my eyes, can be a sin. Have confidence in yourself, but not too much confidence. Also, do not be too over-confident. You may find yourself in bad situations. Like Athene says, “poor child you are being destroyed by your own worth, your talent has poisoned you with pride like the sting of a scorpion…” Don’t be poisoned!
