Theme Of Evil In The Hobbit
The evil in everything can come in two different ways, internal and external. Evil is a horrible thing and can overwhelm you. It is darkness full of hatred and foul. There is an example in The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien where Bilbo Baggins the protagonist and 13 dwarves travel across Mirkwood forest. In this forest, it is a dark place and evil creatures dwell inside. They have to be careful to stay on the path or else they will never find it again. This forest is a weary place. Evil will appear external by demons, dark sorcerers, and . These are all externally evil and try to corrupt you in many different ways. Internal evil, I feel that it is yourself being evil. That you have done something horrible and wicked. These are the two forces of

The Hobbit, by J.R.R Tolkien is a fantasy book set in the medieval ages. Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, embarks on an epic journey with Gandalf and his “party” to recover lost treasure in the lonely mountain guarded by a dragon named Smaug. After making their way past trolls, spiders and Gollum, they finally get to Smaug, then manage to steal the treasure (with they divide up). The two main ideas I found in this book were Bilbo’s heroism and the storyteller (narrator).I think that this book explores and shows the theme good vs evil.…

“With a Shriek that deafened men, felled trees and split stone, Smaug shot spouting into the air, turned and crashed down on high ruin”(Tolkien 224).This is the last we hear of Smaug, before his death in The Hobbit. Smaug is the last major problem between the company and the treasure, and needs to be stopped in order for the treasure to go back to Thorin’s family. Bard a member of Laketown, takes the challenge trying to protect his town, and not caring or knowing what this could do for someone else, for example the dwarves. This would eventually lead to war over greed for the gold by Thorin. Something common in today's society is greed, greed for money, materialistic things, and other things. It’s become common, and is heard on the news often of people that could not keep it from happening, it leads to fights and other things, but the unlikely does happen sometimes and a accomplishment could come out of it. In the Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, Great accomplishments are shown by Bilbo, but not without the help of others. \…

The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien is said to be one of the greatest children's novels of all time. The novel, due to its use of such characters as goblins, elves, trolls, giants, and others is in tradition, a fairy tale. The tale centers on a small hobbit by the name of Bilbo Baggins. It follows the journey of a band of dwarves, a wizard named Gandalf, and their robber, Bilbo on their way to retrieving treasure that had long been taken away from them. The hobbit traveled all over Middle-Earth, beginning with Bilbo's tiny hobbit-hole in the ground, to Mirkwood forest, to finally reaching the Mountain in which the dragon Smaug lives. Tolkien uses a large amount of imagery in his writing which can been seen through settings in The Hobbit. The imagery is usually either dark or light, depending on Bilbo's mood and contrast of his surroundings. J.R.R Tolkien uses dark and light imagery in The Hobbit to effectively set an eerie and mysterious mood and to foreshadow events such as Bilbo's journey in Mirkwood and his adventure in the Mountain.…

    1. Thesis Statement: Within the pages of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien there is courage, adventure, and a great change of character in Mr. Bilbo Baggins. The Hobbit starts off with the description of what sort of creatures’ hobbits are and the introduction of Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo is just like any other regular hobbit; he enjoys food, doesn’t like adventure, and right at the beginning says, “We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner. I don’t see what anyone sees in them (page 6).” This he says to Gandalf the Grey who’s a wizard and returns to Hobbiton after many years on a search for someone who is willing to go on an adventure. Right off the bat Bilbo tells Gandalf absolutely not, he is not looking for an adventure, but Gandalf must of mistook his answer for consent to going on an adventure because before Bilbo knows it he’s off with a group of 13 dwarves on a quest to regain the dwarf Thorin’s homeland from the evil dragon Smaug. I think the moment when Bilbo really begins his change of character is when they were all meeting before they went off on their quest and the dwarves thought he couldn’t hear them, and they started talking about how Bilbo seemed much to small, timid, and weak to be any good at burglaring. When they said those things Bilbo’s Took side of the family won out and he began to find himself thinking, “…He would go without bed and breakfast to be thought fierce. As for little fellow bobbing on the mat it also made him really fierce (page 18)…” This part in the story is when I believe Bilbo began to have sparks of thoughts that maybe he really did want to go on an adventure.…

Evil has no definitive interpretation; it is a matter of morals and the mindset of the being. It depends on the person to define such an ambiguous idea, some have faith in God(s), others look to dictionary definitions. Though based on Grendel’s intelligence and his repeatedly disgusting acts, he is evil. He is an astute being that can comprehend what kind of pain he creates by his ways, and he has no remorse for anything. Good and evil are polar opposites, yet one cannot exist without the other. To understand this intricate relationship, one must have a clear understanding on what exactly good and evil are. These two are not always so black and white, but good can be defined as acting agreeably with societical and personal values. Evil can be defined as going against those values. However, as societies and humans differ, so do their moral codes. What is seen as good in one society or time may be seen as evil in another. Two more factors to consider are intentions and actions. They are two separate entities. Actions are seen, and judged, by everyone else, but intentions are known only by the doer. This is why there is no clear-cut line between good and evil.…

In J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins is presented as a hero, however does not posses the stereotypical qualities of this persona. Throughout the novel Bilbo is faced with immense challenges, defying all odds in order to survive. These challenges allow him to gain wisdom and compassion, ultimately helping him achieve status as a hero. However, his clear preference for simple domestic pleasures, over such adventures, is an obvious defiance of a classic hero. In addition, it is made apparent that Mr Baggins does not have strong idealistic morals, and instead prefers to adhere to more conventional ideals, such as that of common courtesy and friendship. Moreover, Mr Baggins is not overly concerned with the principals of right and wrong, nor does he seek out justice. Furthermore, Bilbo recognises his own weaknesses and is at a constant struggle to overcome the flaws of his character. Although he does not always overcome his flaws, Bilbo is able to face challenges in order to help others. Furthermore Bilbo’s reluctance to give into the archetypal persona of a hero proves to be the reason as to why his character is so successful in becoming one.…
