Theme Of Manipulation In Macbeth
In Macbeth, William Shakespeare uses a combination of manipulation, egotism, and betrayal to reveal how Macbeth is a victim of his own free will. In the play Macbeth is driven to make substandard choices due his weak mind which ultimately lead to his downfall. Although Macbeth is describe as a valiant warrior with great combat skills he is a really flimsy character who is manipulated by others very easily. For instances when the witches first meet Macbeth to profess his fate; it takes them a few sentences to have Macbeth in the palm of their hands. "All hail Macbeth, hail to thee thane of glamis All hail Macbeth, hail to thee thane of the Cawdor All hail Macbeth thou shalt be king here after!” (1.3.48-50) in these lines the witches state Macbeths

With these lines Lady Macbeth induces Macbeth into killing Duncan because she utters that he was a man when he was willing to do what was necessary to become a bigger man hence emasculating him so he would not retreat from their plan. It is clear evidence of how macbeth was once again uncomplicatedly exploited. These two scenes in act one are very crucial to the play since they show how macbeth is manipulated into becoming a victim of his own free will. Egotism is another characteristics that proves macbeth is a victim of his own free will because he is aware of what will happen after the murder is committed, yet he chooses his desire of power over his honor. In the tragedy he iterates "I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o'erlleaps itself and falls no the other-" (1.7.25-28) . Macbeth is admiting there is no existing reason for ducan's death, but the sole fact the he wants brimful puissance.
