In William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth there is a lot of manipulation. Have you ever been manipulated? Shakespeare’s play focus’ a lot on manipulation, and how it can change a lifestyle completely. Hopefully it hasn’t been in the same way manipulation appears throughout the story. Have you ever been manipulated to kill? Or accused of killing? How about witches telling you your fate, but not saying it clearly? Macbeth experiences all of these things throughout the play. In the play Macbeth the first majorly known manipulation appears by Lady Macbeth, when she convinces her husband, Macbeth, to kill the current king, Duncan. Hecate is in charge of all the other witches, and therefore makes the most decisions. However, when she persuades the three witches to tell Macbeth the following, it gives him hope that shall not exist. In Macbeth Act 4.1.79-81 it reads “Be bloody, bold, and resolute; laugh to scorn/The power of man, for none of woman born/Shall harm Macbeth.” In this you read that no one born from a woman will hurt Macbeth. But everyone is born of woman, right? Right, however when Shakespeare wrote the play Macbeth one wasn’t considered born of woman if a c-section had taken place. Macduff had been cut out of his mother, and therefore was able to kill Macbeth, while Macbeth was manipulated into thinking no man on earth could harm him. In conclusion, in Macbeth, William Shakespeare uses supernatural and other humans to develop a theme of manipulation throughout the play. Lady Macbeth inflicted manipulation multiple times throughout the play, as did the witches. They all manipulated Macbeth to kill, or be killed, and gave him confidence he should not have had.
