STRAIN THEORY
Strain theory was introduced by Robert Merton in the early 1930s in his study of wealth. He asserted that whenever a gap or discrepancy between individuals' aspirations and reality exists, frustration will ensue, and individuals will be more likely use illegitimate means to accomplish their goals . In the 1990s, Agnew expanded this theory to apply more broadly to economic aspirations. Agnew argued that people who experience strain are more likely to experience frustration or anger and are then more vulnerable to engaging in criminal or deviant behavior. Sources of strain could stem from three sources: positively valued goals that are not achieved; loss of positively valued stimuli (e.g., loss of a job, loss of a romantic relationship); and presentation of negative stimuli (e.g., history of family violence). It is important to note that strain and deviance are not causal; deviant behavior is a coping mechanism when strain develops. Since the 1990s, strain theory has been applied to other behaviors, and it has been posited that there may be a relationship between strain and cyberbullying or traditional bullying. In one study of 1,963 middle school students, a variety of strains were measured, including receiving a poor grade, breaking up with a girl/boyfriend, and having a quarrel with a family member, and level of frustration and anger was also recorded. The authors found that strain and anger/frustration were correlated to traditional bullying and cyberbullying even after taking into account gender, race, and age. Therefore, strain theory may be helpful in explaining the causes of cyberbullying.
DISINHIBITION THEORY
Disinhibition theory maintains that the Internet can promote an abandonment of some inhibitions, leading to greater disclosure, less restraint, and greater expressiveness.     Rather than having social class goals, youth are often striving for intelligence, physical attractiveness, personality, or strength/athletic ability-driven goals. The foundational idea of strain is still upheld, however, as strain continues to be weighed in terms of separation between the goal and actual achievement. Since individuals are strongly motivated to close the gap between aspirations and results, delinquency is sometimes considered a possible option (Agnew, 1992, p. 225). Similarly, general strain theory discusses the idea of expectation versus reality.     The Social Bond theory was written and proposed by Travis Hirschi in 1969. Social Bond theory, that later developed into Social Control Theory, has historically been an interesting way of approaching social problems and how we in turn explain them. Before one can apply the Social Bond theory, they must first have a firm understanding of its definition, which can be accurately described by Hirschi (1969) as, “Elements of social bonding include attachment to families, commitment to social norms and institutions (school, employment), involvement in activities, and the belief that these things are important” (p.16). This theory is rooted and derived from the General Theory of Crime. Hirschi’s (1969) social bond theory emphasizes the fact that there is an absence of social attachments among juvenile delinquents. Since family, friends, and other members of our social networks affect our lives in many ways, we in turn are direct descendents of their actions. One of the most critical times in our lives is our adolescence. During this critical time we need strong positive social ties to represent society in the best way possible. On the other hand, if the ties we share in our lives are negative and criminal-like habits, it most likely that negative results will occur.     Crime in our society can be defined as an act or the omission of an act that is morally or legally wrong. Many factors contribute to criminal behavior which range from delinquent nature of one’s personality to various socioeconomic challenges one may face in their life time, including child abuse, parental and peer rejection, homelessness and marital problems. The General Strain Theory (GST) broadly explains the association between social circumstances and crime/delinquency. According to the theory, individuals who experience strain are more likely to engage in crime. Strains are defined as stressful events and conditions disliked by individuals. These strains have two categories; objective strain and subjective strain. Objective strain is what is disliked by the majority while subjective strains are disliked by the individuals who experience them. Agnew (2001) suggested that earlier researches of GST were focused on objective strains which brought inconsistencies in results, leading to criticism. The purpose of this essay is to explore Agnew (2001)’s General Strain Theory to discuss whether crime is a choice made by an individual or the influence of their social circumstances. Although the theory has gained significant amounts of criticism, the link between socioeconomic circumstances should not be undermined.
