In this particular situation a psychologist might use a CBT triangle to show the client how his thoughts, emotions and behaviors are all linked together. I believe that CBT is the most effective orientation because it allows a psychologist to help people identify their own emotions instead of focusing on a specific event that has already happened and cannot be changed. CBT is simple, but very effective which is why I mostly identify with it at this moment in my academic career. Psychodynamic therapy takes much longer than CBT and isn’t as structured, but a humanistic approach can be used as either a long term or short-term therapy depending on the psychologist. The basic assumption of psychodynamic perspective is that thoughts and behaviors are determined by unconscious and often conflictual dynamics out of awareness (Bianco, Barilaro, & Palmieri, 2016). This approach categorizes personality into three parts the ego, super ego and the ID. The ID is considered unconscious, the ego is considered unconscious and preconscious while the super ego is considered to be all three unconscious, preconscious and conscious. A psychologist taking the psychodynamic approach would encourage their clients to speak about their issue to confront them and put them in their past so that they can focus on their future. The goal of this orientation is for the client to be self aware of their behaviors and understand why they’re behaving that way. For example if a child was abused while they were younger, the client may have put those feelings and thoughts away. Only for them to resurface twenty years later and can drive the client to hurt themselves physically. Psychodynamic refers to a range of treatments based on psychoanalytic concepts and methods that involve less frequent meetings and may be considerably briefer than psychoanalysis proper.
