Thirteen Reasons Why is set two weeks after local teenager, Hannah Baker, Commit suicide. The book states “Hearing her story on here, on these tapes, must have killed her. A shiver crawls up my back. ‘Killed her’. A phrase I will now drop from my vocabulary”(95). This details Clays newfound reaction to the phrase “killed her”, a phrase often used in everyday life. This enlightened me because I never thought about how such a simple phrase could affect someone in such a way. At a few points throughout the book, we are told how, after listening to the tape, Clay sees people differently. He looked back on people’s behavior, “Did I do something to piss him off, I wondered. I couldn’t have done anything.”(46). In this part, Clay is going over an interaction with Alex Standall, one of the people on the tapes. Alex was just shoved into Clay by someone and Clay is reviewing his reaction. These tapes opened doors, in a way, to new information. Most of this information, Clay wished he never heared, for the guilt weighs too heavily on him. This enlightened me because it helped me see different aspects of people, the good and the bad.
