Thirteen Reasons Why A:
Thirteen Reasons Why, an adult novel by Jay Asher, is written from the point of view of a Junior in High School, Clay Jensen. To some extent, however, the story focuses primarily on Junior Hannah Baker, Clay’s crush. One day, when Clay returns home from school, he finds a strange package on his doorstep -- addressed to him. Inside, he discovers thirteen tapes, all recorded by Hannah Baker. One thing is very confusing, as Hannah killed herself two weeks ago. Hannah's voice tells Clay that there are thirteen reasons why she has chosen to end her life -- and Clay is one of them. Also, rumors will be spread as a result; it is a matter of ignoring them or learning to get past them. I have learned a lot about being careful of every word I say to others, especially to those I love. Also, it is important to consider the more widespread effects of everything someone might do such as insult someone’s appearance. This insulted person may respond by trying to to bring someone else down to feel better about himself/herself. Furthermore, I have realized that rumors will be spread one way or another. The best ways to invalidate them may be to prove them wrong through action, or by effectively learning to ignore them and get past them. This novel made me think about the possibility that I may have hurt someone in the way Hannah was hurt, and that I may be completely oblivious of the ways that I may have hurt them. This novel has helped me see how delicate and sensitive one can be in certain situations and that I should be very careful about avoiding saying something harsh or rude or sarcastic. Also, I have learned that my actions will rarely affect only those that they are directed at; moreover, rumors are simply a fact of life. Thirteen Reasons Why, a novel written mainly for those with suicidal feelings, has helped me realize that I must be alert for any signs such as change in physical appearance, and more conscious of the ways I affect those around
