Think Of An External Values Conflict When You Did Not Act To Resolve The Conflict In America Case Study
Part 1: Think of an external values conflict when you acted to resolve the conflict:
1. What did you do and what was the impact?
a. In my second year as a Resident Assistant (RA), I was on duty one weekend spending time with a fellow RA. Suddenly, a beloved resident rushed into the mind clearly distressed. As the conversation continued, we found that this resident was highly paranoid and fearing death after using marijuana for the first time. Knowing the University’s strict policies on marijuana, my fellow RA and I were hesitant to report the student due to fear of the consequences for the kind and smart young man. My fellow RA and I wrestled with the perceived values of the University – including strict drug enforcement and severe penalties

It would have been easier to respond to the situation if I had a better understanding of the underlying principles guiding the University’s conduct process. Rather than seeing the system as punitive and judgmental, I now see it as informative and restorative. Having this view prior to making these decisions would have made it easier to align my values with those of the University from the onset.

Part 2: Think of an external values conflict when you did not act to resolve the conflict:
1. What happened?
a. During a test in 7th grade history class, a neighbor asked if she could cheat from my test. I knew cheating was wrong, but I decided to let her look at my answers anyway. The next week, the history teacher called me out of band class to discuss this same test. I tried to cover up my actions, as he could tell it was my work and not hers that was copied, but at the end of the day her and I both received a failing grade on the test. This led to receiving my first ever B on a report card – a devastating event for my younger self. Certainly, this experience offered a hard-learned lesson.

2. What motivated not speaking up against the conflict? What could change this?
a. Wanting to remain quiet during the test, uncertainty regarding how to say decline her request to copy, and wanting to look “cool” for my peer all motivated inaction in the face of this value

To begin, due to being a nurse, Thayer had access to controlled substances and unfortunately, for Thayer, the temptation seems to have been too great a burden. After repeated offenses, he was justly punished for his breach of trust. The one-year suspension took away his profession and means of economic support. By making his actions part of the public record, he was duly shamed and embarrassed within his professional community as well as in the eye of the general public. In turn, the state “Board” generously provided for his rehabilitation after disciplinary action. They provided/required the nurse to stay substance clean and get involved with professional help groups in the hope that these nurses can return and again become trusted professionals. The two part, disciplinary and rehabilitory aspects of the state “Board’s” courses of action in regard to unethical misconduct is to protect the medical institutions, patients, and even the nurse, who breaches their ethical duty by personal…

When I was in 7th grade I received a “C” on my report card for my algebra class, all because of a homework assignment I had gotten a “0” on. My excuse for not turning in the assignment was because “I couldn’t find my workbook.” My parents were very upset that I got a “C” on my report card due to the fact that they were already aware that the homework assignment was a zero, and that I could have turned it in late and still get a “B” on my report card that quarter. We were scheduled to have a conference with my algebra teacher to discuss my report card grade and why I had gotten it. Not long before the night of the conference my dad told me to find my workbook, but I ended up doing a sloppy job at it.…
