This quote from the book is when Miss Emma, Tante Lou, and Reverend Ambrose go visit Jefferson in jail. Miss Emma tries to have Jefferson speak to his company, and he ignores what she says. Then she goes on to try and get him to eat the food she brought him. Then he begins to call himself a hog. Which begins to hurt Miss Emma because she obviously does not believe that Jefferson is a hog. Then she slaps him. Seconds after, she begins to cry and her friends carry her out of the cell. I feel as if Miss Emma slapped Jefferson out of stress and anger. She has been stressed with the idea of the fact Jefferson can be killed any day now. Jefferson dies as a man, and not a hog. I feel as if this part of the story is very important. Miss Emma’s goal to make sure Jefferson dies a man is shown more. She lashed out on him, because he began to call himself a hog. Which is the last thing she wants. I can relate to this as if I were Jefferson. When you go through a hard point in your life, sometimes you don’t want to be around anyone. I know when I am upset, I most definitely block everyone out. I also can feel for Jefferson when he begins to think, that he actually is the hog he was being called. Sometimes when someone calls you something like that you begin to think, maybe I am actually that. Your mind begins to start accepting the fact that maybe you are, stupid or you are a hog.
