The alliances of the war were made of the six most powerful countries in Europe at the time and were split
into two sides of the war, the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. The Triple Entente was made up of Russia, France and Great Britain. The US would, towards the end of the war, join this side for less than a year. The Entente alliance was inevitable because the alliance was created by the miscalculations and actions of Germany. The Triple Alliance was made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. Italy, in the early years before the war, sided with the Triple Alliance. When the war broke out, Italy should have fought with the countries in the alliance. Instead Italy waited to see how the war played out and, almost a year after the war started, Italy joined the war with the Triple Entente. Italy had secretly signed the Treaty of London with Britain before entering the war. Britain promised Italy large pieces of land but didn’t follow through with their promise in the end.
Imperialism played a crucial part for the countries of the World War. The countries with more colonies had more soldiers to send to war. If a side had more soldiers that they could send to war then they had a better chance of outlasting the enemy also known as attrition. 25% of the globe used to belong to Britain alone. Britain had colonies in Africa, North America, India, China, and Australia. One of Britain’s allies, France, was also a dominant imperial power with colonies in many of the same places as Britain. Places such as Africa, North America, and China. The Triple Alliance didn’t have many colonies but they were still a force to be reckoned with. The war became a World War because the colonies started fighting the war for their mother land. Without the colonies’ involvement the war would have just been a European war.
Militarism became a part of normal life in some these countries in order to try and get more boys and men to join the army as soon as they were of age. For example, in Germany, many school teachers would talk about how great it would be to be in the war fighting for their country. All over Europe, especially in Germany and Russia, little boys would be called Little soldiers all of their lives so when they got older they would want the chance to prove that they are, in fact, soldiers.
Alliances, imperialism, and militarism were all causes of the First World War. The war was ended with the Treaty of Versailles. The treaty seemed to solve things at first. In the long run it was disastrous because it caused the Second World War but that’s a different historical event.
