How an individual understand information and use them to solve complex problems are mainly influenced by his or her learning style. Basically, when you can learn about how you learn, you can study and absorb information much more effectively. In 1987, Neil Fleming who has dedicated his life to explore teaching and learning, developed a popular model called VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/write and Kinesthetic) to show that there are many ways an individual can learn effectively. “VARK is a questionnaire that provides users with a profile of their learning preferences. These preferences are about the ways that they want to take-in and give-out information. ( Fleming, 2011) When we can learn about who we really are by knowing our preferences, we can reflect internally of what we can do to make a positive change for a better learning result. This paper will explore and analyze the scores received from VARK questionnaire which help identify learning styles for Tanida Maselli. It will also further investigate and compare the preferred learning styles and identified learning styles which influence teaching and learning.…
David Farabee starts off by looking at crime rates and the public’s perception of crime from the media. The media focuses on high profile cases for severe acts of crime which is not that common compared to other criminal acts. He states that the society’s reaction from the media produces an affect that the crime rate is increasing at an alarming rate. The public’s perception and voice has major influence on what happens with the criminal justice system. Society wants the policy makers to aim for rehabilitative and counselling efforts rather than locking up the criminals. They would rather see them be back on track and reintegrated into society to have a better life. What the…
The criminal justice is separated into three branches which all supports each other. What is each branch responsible for? The law enforcement branch is responsible for enforcing the law, investigating crimes that were committed, making arrest and providing safety. The courts responsibility is to uphold the law, settle disputes and make sure each party is giving a fair chance to provide evidence, facts to support their case. The corrections branch enforces punishment whether its jail, prison, probation or parole.…
Someone can be affected by their surroundings, whether it is the community, they live in or peer pressure. In addition, someone’s genetics can have an influence on his or her behaviors. That person could suffer from a mental illness that causes irrational behaviors. There are also the individuals that just want to do it on their own free will (Schmalleger, 2011, p.…
Capital punishment has continued to be used as the major punishment for convicted felons for a long time now. However, it has been a subject of controversy in recent years and has been seen as an inhuman mode of punishment in the modern era. This is because of the various legal challenges it faces and the methods used in executing the punishment, which include the use of a firing squad, lethal injections and the electric chair among others. However, those supporting capital punishment argue that revenge is the only way justice can be achieved while those against it see it all wrong for the state to take any citizen’s life (Neubauer and Fradella 391).…
Crime is a very fragile word that could be portrayed into many different understandings. The definition of a crime; According to "Dictionary.com" (2014), " is an action or an instance of negligence that is deemed injurious to the public welfare or morals or to the interests of the state, and that is legally prohibited" (Noun 1.) Law means having a set of rules and regulations in which communities and society as a whole abide by. Crime can be understood as acting against those laws (rules) that have a punishment in return for those actions. There are two models that are most commonly used by society to determine whether certain acts…
3 Branches of Criminal Justice The first branch of the Criminal Justice System is law Enforcement, which is responsible For, enforcing the laws, determining if a crime has occurred, investigate the crime, and press charges, if appropriate. Second, is courts, which must review evidence, determine if the accused is guilty, and decide if the punishment is needed, if so, what type would be appropriate; there are two types of courts: federal and State. The third branch is corrections, which monitors the sentence enforced by the court, incarceration (misdemeanor or Felony), rehabilitation (trying to "cure" the offender). Each branch depends on one another in order to Function For example: law enforcement make’s sure that they arrest those who break the…
Our lawful intent is to stop all criminals – most importantly the violent offenders. However, the result has been that criminals that have a history of minor offenses such as: petite theft or dealing drugs, are being sent away for longer terms than the criminals who commit violent acts. The population in prisons have grown so much that most facilities are already packed beyond capacity and many more prisons are needed to be built. However, there are, in fact, alternative solutions to this particular issue of prison overcrowding. Victimless crimes do not always need to be punished by putting people in jail.…
The United States (U.S.) Criminal Justice System (CJS) consists of three interconnected branches that rely on communication and collaborative efforts to function and meet the needs of society. The three CJS branches of law enforcement, courts, and corrections can appear autonomous but it is common for all three branches to share responsibilities and rely on information collected from various areas of the CJS. Some examples of necessary collaboration and communication situations between CJS branches include legal searches, investigations, and pre-sentence reporting. Supreme Court decisions or major state cases will also influence the roles and responsibilities of the CJS branches at both the state and federal levels (Fagin, 2017). Lastly, research…
Everyday 2,220,300 inmates live their lives in prisons throughout the United States. That’s 0.91% of the adult population, or 1 in 110 (Glaze 2013). What if you were next? The thought would scare anyone and the flaws in the system pose a threat to low income individuals and minorities. The sole purpose of the Justice System is to deliver justice for all, by only convicting and sentencing the guilty, while preventing offenders from reoffending. The system was designed to protect the innocent. What if that was not the case? In fact, Out of the 733,000 people held in local jails at this time, 2/3 of them have not been convicted and many are there simply…
The Criminal Justice System is the system of law enforcement that is directly involved in apprehending, prosecuting, defending, sentencing and punishes those who is suspected or convicted of criminal offenses. The two main systems are the State and Federal: The state criminal justice systems handles crime committed within their state boundaries while the Federal criminal justice system handles crimes committed on federal property or in several states; Federal crimes compared to state crimes are more severe and the jail times are longer. The Jury plays a central role in the justice system,in a trial the jury hears evidence, testimonies, and determines whether it satisfies the crime. (Burns, Ronald G. The Criminal Justice System. Upper Saddle…
Should vaccinations be mandatory for children entering school? At the present time, all fifty states in the United States require children entering public school to be vaccinated. However, no federal vaccination laws exist (ProCon.org, Children Vaccinations, Did you know?). Many parents hold religious beliefs against vaccination. Forcing such parents to vaccinate their children would violate the First Amendment, which guarantees citizens the right to the free exercise of their religion. Others believe that common childhood vaccinations may cause rare, yet serious reactions.…
Laws are put in place to keep the community safe from harm and if those laws are broken actions are taken to punish the offender. The criminal justice system is made up of three components law enforcement, courts, and corrections. These three components work together to apprehend criminals, determine whether or not he or she are guilty, and if guilty to punish them for their criminal actions.…
In the 2014 opinion piece “Sentencing a side issue that won’t end street violence,” written by Pat Easton, uses a controlled and informative, yet concerned tone, to present a strong argument that is aimed at the general public, in the hope that they will see the reality that the focus should be fewer victims, less crime and safer communities, not just more punishment.…
One of the leading topics of debate concerning the issue of capital punishment is whether capital punishment existing deters criminals from committing serious and violent crimes such as homicides and sexual assault. This paper explores the findings and thought processes of some of the leading criminologists in the World and their interpretation of statistical data of homicide incidence rates. As I am exploring similar research in my paper, their findings can help me develop my own opinion on whether capital punishment is an effective and powerful enough deterrent to negate violent criminal activity or whether it would be prudent to avoid capital punishment altogether and follow an incarceration model such as that employed within Canada.…
