They aim mostly at kids because they can’t understand the real purpose of ads and trust that everything an ads says are true. The book Chew On This claims “Far from banned, Tv advertising aimed at kids is how broadcast twenty-four hours a day on some channel… Children now see a junk food ad every 5 minutes while watching Tv and see about 3 hours of junk food ads every week.” This is important because these food corporations are brainwashing children so that they could buy their sources. It is wrong to produce such ads for young children because they don’t know how unhealthy these foods are. The idea of banning these advertisements are being strongly opposed by toy companies, television networks, and major advertising agency. These ads are targeting children so that they can earn more money, but, they are getting them very…

Healthy eating is of great importance as it has a drastic effect on one’s life, and more importantly on the lives of children. Providing appropriate nutrition and educating elementary children of the significance of proper nutrition are essential factors for proper growth and development, chronic disease prevention, and the achievement of academic success (Pittman et al., 2012). Without proper nutritional guidance, children are susceptible towards falling into long lasting poor eating habits that may lead to a number of health risks, including obesity (Steele et al., 2011). Obesity and other health issues are becoming significant problems that keep increasing and have started to become a visible issue in younger children (Steele et al., 2011). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of promoting healthy eating to children in elementary school and the role schools play in the choices children make. This paper also provides solutions to the health issues discussed above by identifying the barriers to healthy eating. More specifically, how these barriers in the education system can prevent elementary school children from learning about healthy eating and how schools can overcome these barriers by adding healthy eating programs to promote optimum health and well being.…

With the growing concern for obesity in the kids coming up today the government is calling for dramatic changes in school meals, including limiting french fries, sodium and calories and offering students more fruits and vegetables. How can this problem be solved in reality? The answer is simple, schools should implement lunches that are delightful and healthy for them. As an example, they should put fruits and vegetables that students actually like. Potatoes, ranked as the most popular vegetable (Ranker, 3), are actually good for the student’s health and they are actually delicious when prepared in mashed potatoes. To add, schools should put salads as an option for the reason that many students prefer to eat salads when offered because they realize it is actually pretty good and, hence, healthy for them. The answer to the pandemic of obesity that is happening to the United States is to offer people a menu that they actually like and they know it is healthy for them. In today 's society it is so easy to get caught up in the day to day duties of life; people often forget that their eating habits could be the death of them. The children of today are the children of the future, therefore raising them to make healthy eating choices in their childhood could prevent them from becoming part of the 20 percent of children that are obese. Over the past 30 years childhood obesity has more than tripled in the United States. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, obesity in children is one of the easiest medical conditions to recognize but most difficult to treat. Due to a poor diet and lack of exercise children can run the dangerous risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes which go hand and hand with severely overweight children. Kids who are unhappy with their weight may also be more likely to develop eating disorders. Diagnosing and treating overweight and obesity in children as early as possible may reduce the risk of developing serious medical conditions. In the United States alone, over 300,000 deaths each year can be attributed to this disease (American Academy of Child, 2008). In 2005 a study found that children today may lead shorter lives by two to five years than their parents due to obesity (USA Today, 2011). Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise both at home and in school. Schools are a major cause of child obesity becoming an epidemic and it is time to take a closer look at how childhood obesity and the school system can be directly related. Removing nutrition in school lunches, lack of education toward…

Junk Food is a vast contributor to the increasing levels of diabetes, and other chronic conditions and diseases in America. In order to establish a healthy country, Americans must alter eating habits and establish knowledge within our nation’s children. The beverage and food industry spend billions of dollars annually to promote its products to children. Public institutions promote these products to increase revenue for school needed activities. This continuous, unhealthy cycle is in adversely affecting the nation. It’s time to raise the bar and set a higher standard for nutritional value in our nation, starting with in our school organization. Abolishing sugary snacks and inaugurating health eating habits will benefit children’s health,…

    Baltimore Childhood Obesity

Since kids spend a lot of their time in school, it is good medium to provide healthy weight education. Children are very impressionable and pick up their life long eating habits at a young age. That is why starting in elementary school positive eating habits and exercise should be encouraged. Ideas such as banning unhealthy foods from schools and increasing mandatory physical education sound good in theory, but are too costly and not feasible solutions for Baltimore. It is much more probable that children will learn to make better choices if good habits are reinforced in schools starting at a young age. The results of study conducted in Canada in 2005, which compared fifth grade students who had attended an elementary school with a nutritional education program to students who attended schools without nutritional programs, showed that students at schools with nutritional education program had significantly lower rates of obesity, higher fruit and vegetable intake, and lower fat consumption ( Veugelers & Fitzgerald, 2005, p. 234). Baltimore school should create healthy weight education programs targeted at elementary school children. Teachers should be required to incorporate basic lessons that teach kids about healthy foods and the importance of exercise. I propose that Baltimore City schools partner with Education in Elementary, a nutritional education program started by Dr.…

Schools have recently been reconstructing their lunches to prevent childhood obesity and create healthier environments. Although people may think the answer to the problem is taking away certain foods and stopping homemade lunches, only through the influence of healthy parents, control over cafeteria items children are able to purchase, and tolerable food that’s still wholesome, will students be able to have nutritious and balanced school lunches, and in turn, healthier lives. If a child’s parent is able to make them a healthy lunch they should be able to, however, some schools ban homemade lunches and leave no other option than to eat a school lunch or the child will not eat. Author Liz Goodwin makes known that students who go to school…

Another reason cafeterias should start serving healthier food is that junk food does not give kids the energy needed to stay focused in school or the power to participate in sports. “The cafeteria must offer produce, dairy, protein and grain, but three groups constitute a full meal, so many students leave behind the fruits and vegetables” (Martinez, 1). Lunch is right in the middle of the day, if you eat fatty or sugary foods, it could cause you to get tired and not pay attention in your afternoon classes. In addition, junk food caps your energy, which affects your physical activity. You cannot perform your best if you don’t have any energy. Children should be eating more healthy, natural foods.…

It is not surprising that Los Angeles and many school districts in the country have been introducing strict bans on unhealthy foods due to an alarming problem with childhood obesity. The problem became more apparent when a national study conducted by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) found that one in three American children attending public schools were reported to be obese (Chase, par. 7). Most of the blame for the alarming ratio of student obesity was directed to “junk” foods and sedentary activity. In response, Los Angeles schools and many other schools in the country have made it a mission to offer their students healthier menus and encourage good eating habits largely by banning food items that are deemed unhealthy.…

School articles say by eliminating unhealthy foods obesity went down by 10 percent within two months.
