The concept of thrifty genes by itself is one amazing thing our body can do. A scientific article titled “Eating, exercise, and “thrifty” genotypes; connecting the dots toward an evolutionary understanding of modern chronic diseases” by Chakravarthy and Booth is an example of an essay that explores the concept of Thrifty genes and uses this concept to determine the understanding of chronic diseases that occur at present. The beginning of the paper is mostly focused on the objectives of using information from the past to figure out things such as the chronic disease that are present today. Thrifty gene according to the dictionary are “genes which enable individuals to efficiently collect and process food to deposit fat during periods of food …show more content…
Unlike the hunter gatherer society, the society now is used to feeding our body system whatever it desires at anytime. The hunter gatherer society had a metabolism that used the fat and proteins stored when the person is in need, however now, the fat stored is hurting people especially abdominal fat that completely blocks insulin. The authors of this article feel that this inactivity issue can be a great help when it comes to figuring out “inactivity-mediated chronic diseases. This essay subjects that as humans have decreased physical activity out of their daily lives and so, the risk of at least 35 chronic diseases has increased. This is an important issue because with the evolving genes, scientists have to learn and understand these genes so that a cure could be found. Overall this essay reviews the thrifty gene and its long existence with assisting humans to survive. The essay also hypothesized that many chronic diseases including Abdominal adiposity occurs because of the dysregulation of “thrifty” genes by the environmental component of physical inactivity. The chronic disease numbers are increasing and the only way to prevent them is by having more understanding of the “thrifty”

Obesity is becoming a major worldwide epidemic that is a chronic disease which affects everyone young and old, male and female alike. The exact cause is still unknown and scientists are still trying to understand what triggers it. One cause is that in today’s fast paced world, people do not have time to sit down to home cooked meals, or exercise and really take good care of their heath. Fast food restaurants are replacing the home cooked meals and providing bigger portions on their menus and people not finding time to exercise. Instead, they choose to sit down and watch movies at home or surf the net as a source of entertainment due to economic reasons. Children are playing video games instead of playing sports or riding bikes (Obesity in America: What’s driving the epidemic?, 2012. 02). This is becoming a harmful trend which is contributing to the rise of chronic diseases. Obesity does not discriminate and studies over the years have found that there is a significant difference in obesity by ethnicity and race and it differs by sex and age. The body mass index (BMI) assesses one’s body weight relative to height. The weight in kilograms is divided by height in meters squared (kg/m^2). It correlates highly with body fat in most people hence is a useful, indirect measure of body composition. According to research carried out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with increasing weight the risk of diseases also increases including cancer, stroke, coronary heart disease etc. A BMI between 25.0 and 30.0 is defined to be “overweight” and a BMI of over 30.0 is defined to as “obesity” (30 or more pounds overweight). Overweight and obesity result form an energy imbalance which involves consuming too many calories as compared to the amount of physical activity one does. The question lies on whether this issue is mainly because of psychological factor beyond an individual’s control or personal choices made by the obese individual. Genetics and the…

According to the U,S. Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States over the past 20 years. Obesity epidemic has affected every part of the world. When speaking about United States, more than 72 million adults are obese and there is not a single state that has an obesity rate less than 15 % (CDC Vitalsigns 2010). Among all Americans Obesity has been directly linked to hypertension, diabetes, cancer, depression and many other health problems. Each year, approximately 400.000 deaths result from obesity and its complications and costs the national economy nearly $122.9 billion annually (Menifield 2008). In addition, as of 2004, the proportion of obese adults in the U,S. reached 32% of the total population. Among adolescents, obesity has increased to 17.1% of the population between the 1999-2004 periods (Menifield 2008). One of the causes of obesity is energy imbalance. This means eating too many calories compared to physical activity. As we know that, nowadays people spend more time watching T.V and playing video games. Moreover food portion size has also increased not only at home but also in many restaurants. In addition, environment and behavior play a large role causing people to be overweight. People make decision base on their culture, values and beliefs. For example, in some culture it is not important for women to exercise or women are not allowed to go for a walk. Many community lack sidewalks, parks and public activity area and that may influence their activity level. Science indicates that genetics shows a role in obesity. Individuals with excess body fat or obesity put themselves at risk of developing a number of serious diseases, which range from digestive problems to heart attacks. According to Heyward and Wagner (2004), obesity is not only about an increase in body fat, but also contributes to changes in body composition, namely water, mineral, and protein content. The researchers added that it is not only the body fat that triggers health problems but also the regional distribution of fat that causes chronic disease. For example, individuals with abdominal obesity or upper-body obesity have a higher risk of developing chronic diseases compared to individuals whose excess fat is deposited in lower body.…

Obesity can be caused by different things such as diet, lack of exercise, an individual’s environment and it can also be caused by genetics. Furthermore, to the causes of obesity, there are many health risks of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure which can lead to a brain damage and kidney failure. However, there are early prevention and amendments to these risks such as exercising regularly and eating healthy for a healthy lifestyle. Despite these early preventions, there are treatments to amend the already existing condition, such as gastric bypass surgery but, this is still very much unlikely to provide an individual with a long lasting result because it is only quicker, easier, and therefore, temporary. On the contrary, living a healthy lifestyle, maintaining a good diet and regular exercise are the best way to stay at a healthy weight. Individual excuse themselves from living healthy in the view of genetic cause and some have the knowledge that children cannot be at risk of chronic disease but only adults. Ivan Illich when defined health stated “the ability to suffer” is health and adaptation to changes. Therefore, individuals in this circumstance should be able to make changes in their lifestyle and adapting to the hard work that comes with living…

The medical definition for obesity is having too much body fat. Many people tend to get obesity and being overweight mixed up. Being obese is different from being overweight in that being overweight is the status of weighing too much. This weight can come from many places, such as muscle, bone, fat, and/or body water. While technically they don’t mean the same thing, they both, however, mean that a person’s weight is greater than what is considered healthy for his or her height. This social problem has become an increasingly severe medical problem dating back to the early 1960s as shown in the national nutritional surveys that have been given. Although it has been proven that genetics are a large…
