Tilapia Case Study
Tilapia has a number of characteristics that make them attractive to culture them. For example, they can tolerate the crowding and handling that is required in tank-based facility. Tilapia have heavy slime coat that protects them from abrasion and bacterial infections that would adversely affect other many fish. Furthermore, Tilapia also shows amazingly tolerant of poor or variable water quality (Dennis et al., 2009)

Water quality requirements

Water quality parameter is the most important that needs to be considered in culturing Tilapia and also other fish. If poor water quality the growth of the fish will retard and will shows the low production. That why it need effort to always monitor them.

For culturing Tilapia, always maintain at less than 40 mg/L. Elevated carbon dioxide levels will cause lethargic behavior or slow feeding response in fish.

METHODOLOGY

Microalgae sample collection, culture and maintenance

Nannochloropsis sp. obtained from Hatchery School of Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences, UMT. The pure of Nannochloropsis sp. was culture as a batch culture with small scale containing aquaculture wastewater as culture medium in the culture room. The culture will be observed until it can be transfer into the larger culture. The culture also will provide aeration and will monitor in daily. The sub culturing is done in every two weeks in order to maintain healthy and in good stocks. Then the stock culture will be used during culture experiment.

Experimental design

The Nannochloropsis sp. will grow in wastewater. The culture media were prepared in five replicates. The growth of Nannochloropsis sp. will be evaluated.

Larvae tilapia will be transferred into the aquarium with 12L of freshwater and the aeration will provide. The cultured of tilapia then will be feed with the Nannochloropsis sp. The growth of larvae tilapia will be measure on their length and weight. To take their length and weight of larvae tilapia, we must take the larvae and formalin then dry it. After that, take their length and weight. In fish, the larvae stage generally consists of the period of rapid growth, which can vary substantially in duration within and among species (Sinclair and Tremblay, 1985). The observation and data analysis will be recorded every day until the larvae tilapia reach into the stage

    Natural Selection is the environments’ favoring of a particular trait in a population. Organisms use many different methods to adapt to their environments. In this experiment one must use brine shrimp and salt water solutions to represent organisms and their environments. Some organisms like the brine shrimp adapt to changes in their environments. Brine shrimp eggs produce cysts when their environmental conditions aren’t being cooperative. Brine shrimp eggs grow hard and brown when their environment does not have enough oxygen to support them. This also happens when there is too much salt content in their environment. When the eggs become hard and brown, they can be kept for long periods of time in a dry, oxygen- free environment. When the cyst is returned to its normal environment, it continues on with its development and eventually hatches. Brine shrimp are the perfect organisms to do experiments on because they only require a short time for development. The person conducting the experiment must use 5 beakers, each with different amounts of salt in them. The point of the experiment is to see how the brine shrimp eggs respond in each dish of salt concentrate. Once the salt and water have been combined, one must place approximately twenty brine shrimp on a microscope slide. After twenty four hours, some of the brine shrimp eggs should have hatched while some have partially hatched or not hatched yet. This must be done at the twenty four hour mark and the forty eight hour mark. The data should be written down on the chart given in the experiment papers. The hatching viability must be found by adding the number of hatched eggs at twenty four hours and the hatched eggs at forty eight hours and dividing it by the initial amount of eggs placed in the petri dish.…
