The Times of India is one of the widest circulated newspapers of India which has been serving the nation since 1838. The Times of India belongs to the Times Group, which is headed by Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. is the largest media services conglomerate in India. The Times of India newspaper is headed by Vineet and Samir Jain. The Times Of India also known as TOI is one of India's leading English daily newspapers. TOI group has 45 dailies and periodicals in 3 languages and 108 editions from 11 centres across the country and a combined readership of over 75 lakhs.
HISTORY
The newspaper was founded on November 3, 1838 as The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce during the British Raj. It was founded by Raobahadur Narayan Dinanath Velkar. The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce was launched as a bi-weekly edition, was published every Wednesday and Saturday. With increasing popularity, in the year 1850, “The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce” was turned into a daily newspaper from the earlier bi-weekly.
In 1859, Robert Knight merged “The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce” with two more popular newspapers – “Bombay Standard” and “Chronicle of Western India” and founded “Bombay Times and Standard”. In 1861, Knight merged “Bombay Times and Standard” with “Bombay Telegraph & Courier” and renamed it to what the publication is called even today – “The Times of India”. The “The Times of India” was circulated in India and Europe and by the beginning of 20th century it employed as many as 800 odd people.
