India Arie received her love for music from her mother who was a singer. Joyce was India Arie's music mentor, India Arie persistently developed her musical skills during her early years, joining her church's choir in conjunction with learning to play various musical instruments such as, baritone, French horn, clarinet, saxophone and trumpet.
