Tina Monologue
Tina- I hate school and everyone in it. I don’t understand why I have to go to school until I am 16. Even my mother knows I am wasting my time there.
Counselor- What makes you dis-like school and hate everyone?
Tina- I just do. Everyone picks on me and bullies me. I don’t fit in. No one cares what happens to me.
Counselor- Well what makes think you don’t fit in?
Tina- I don’t get along with anyone. I think the kids don’t like me because I am fat.
Counselor- So that’s why you don’t think you fit in with your peers.
Tina- SILENCE
Yeah, I am always late, I am in trouble all the time, and dumb. (Sigh) I am overweight and so is my family. It’s really embarrassing cuz (because) they don’t care about anything, especially me.

Have you talked to your mom about how you feel about school?
Tina- No. Not really.
Counselor- Maybe you can sit down and talk to her about your grade and how you feel.
Tina- Why should I talk to her about school and what I feel when she doesn’t even show up for parent teacher meetings?
Counselor- Has she told you why she does not go to the meetings.
Tina- Yeah, she told me she is too ill to go and I am just fine at home.
Counselor- Would you like to do better in school and go on to the 8th grade.
Tina- No, I give up with school.
Counselor- What would you do if you dropped out? How would you get a job?
Tina- I do not know. I would become a hair dresser; you don’t need school for that.
Counselor- Is that what you want to do?
Tina- Yeah, I like doing

During an interview with Donna Jones, high school counselor, at John H. Guyer High School in Denton, Texas, I was able to learn some of the many qualities a school counselor must exhibit on a daily bases. Prior to arranging the interviewed, I reviewed various articles and literature on the topic along with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) list of suggested questions to ask a counselor. Feeling prepared, I conducted the interview at Ms. Jones’s office on Wednesday, June 8, 2016. The first thing I observed was the little to no distractions (ringing telephones, staff interruptions) in her office since school was not in session. During most school days, it is difficult to get school related questions asked and answered by her due to the volume of interruptions she experiences.…

Hello, I'm Vanessa Medina, a 15-year-old ninth grader at Hamilton High School in Milwaukee. I was born on October 2, 2000. I live with my mother Amy, and sisters Adriana, Alex and Gabby. I have 2 pets, one is a Maltese dog named Buttons and a kitty my family and I rescued named Greenie. I started at a head start school called Guadalupe Head Start-Loyola at the age of 3, then went on to Fairview Charter School, and now I'm at Hamilton. I was doing great at head start because it was mostly playtime and I was outgoing, I was doing pretty good in Fairview too, but as I aged and in the 5th grade I became very introverted. I started having bad grades because I was too nervous to raise my hand for help, or to talk to people that I had known for a…

83% of juniors at South St. Paul Secondary High School complain about their teachers, schoolwork, and the lack of a social life due to IB classes. On Thursday, the 11th grade students at South St. Paul High School all cheered and yelled as the bell rang at 2:35 for the day to be over and a three-day weekend to begin. As the students quickly rushed to their lockers, grabbed their backpacks and ran out the school, we overheard conversations of plans for the week. We stopped to speak to a girl clearly on a mission to get home. As we walked quickly behind her, she said loudly, “I’m sick and damn tired of all these people I just want to go home and watch Netflix for three days!” She then sped up and ran away from us.…

When one thinks of a counselor, what ideas come to mind? To advise, to instruct, to counsel? My reaction to counseling in my early days in the profession was to receive guidance from a professional when I did not have the answers myself or when I felt “stuck” with a problem in my personal life that I felt I could not solve. What did I wish to get from seeing a counselor? The question depends on what aspect you are seeking guidance or counsel in your life. The question changed when I began to pursue a career in counseling. The question became “Why do I want to be a counselor? Who do I want to serve? What is it about me that feels that I can be effective at helping people change their lives? The questions continue and Im still seeking my “identity” in terms of this profession. What are the characteristics of a counselor/ What are their varied roles? . This paper will explore the domains of the counselor and the paths I have chosen to pursue to further my interest in this dynamic field.…
