As my finger typed I listened to silence only to be broke by the sound of a car motor, this was a rare thing to hear at night in Maycomb county and everyone who could hear it would know why. Recently Atticus -a great lawyer known all throughout maycomb county- had taken up a black's case, many men are not happy with what Tom is said to have done and have decided they would teach them a lesson. I glance at my clock it was around 10 at night I looked down as I fiddled with my gun walking to the window. Taking a seat Atticus was hanging a light talking to Tom I figured he would read my newest publishment.     The chapter opens with the introduction of the narrator, Scout (Jean Louise) Finch, her older brother Jem (Jeremy), and their friend and neighbor, Dill (Charles Baker Harris). Next, Lee provides an overview of Finch family history. Their ancestor, a Methodist named Simon Finch, fled British persecution and eventually settled in Alabama, where he trapped animals for fur and practiced medicine. Having bought several slaves, he established a largely self-sufficient homestead and farm, Finch's Landing, near Saint Stephens. The family lost its wealth in the Civil War. Scout's father, Atticus Finch, studied law in Montgomery while supporting his brother, John "Jack" Hale Finch, who was in medical school in Boston. Their sister Alexandra remained at Finch's Landing. Atticus began his law practice in Maycomb, the county seat of Maycomb County, where his "office in the courthouse contained little more than a hat rack, a spittoon, a checkerboard, and an unsullied Code of Alabama." His first case entailed defending two men who refused to plead guilty for second-degree murder. They instead pled not guilty for first-degree murder, and were hanged, marking "probably the beginning of my father's profound distaste for criminal law." Scout then describes Depression-era Maycomb, "an old tired town when I first knew it", summer heat and slow pace of life. She notes, "There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County". Scout describes as her father as entirely "satisfactory," and her family's black cook, Calpurnia, as strict and "tyrannical." Scout and Jem's mother died of a heart attack when Scout was two and she has no memories of her. However, Jem can remember his mother and Scout notices that he is occasionally nostalgic about her.     Atticus Finch said, “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird." Jem learns that it’s wrong to kill a mockingbird because they are innocent creatures. As the citizens of Maycomb are introduced, you realize all the hatred and violence that kids, parents, and friends have to experience. Some children, like Dill, who’s basically an orphan, want nothing except to have a family to look after them; Or Jem, who start out enjoying their young lives, but later grow up to a world full of wrong-doing. Even a man who was victimized from one event that happened in his teen years, grows up innocent minded, yet was still treated as a foe after he grew up. Harper Lee destroys the innocence of three child-like “mockingbirds” in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, to metaphorically illustrate the pureness that’s lost in everyday life.
