To Kill A Mockingbird Passage
This passage is significant because it describes one of the problems that is shown in the novel. That is, white men tend to take advantage over black men because they know they are weak and helpless. An example would be Mr. Ewell and Tom Robinson, Ewell took advantage of Tom and made up a whole story which ruined Tom Robinson’s reputation. Atticus knew that this was wrong so he told Jem so that when Jem got older he wouldn’t make the same mistake and to know what to expect in the future.
I agree with this passage because no matter who the white man is it’s never right to take advantage of someone weaker than you, no matter how different looking he is. Whoever has the nerve to take advantage of someone weaker should be known as trash because

Here, Harper Lee reveals Scout's phenomenal understanding of life. Scout is quite young and her father is not certain if she understands all that was said. However, she surprises him and makes him incredibly proud by comparing Boo Radley to a mockingbird. Just like a mockingbird, Boo has never harmed a soul, and it would be a sin to bring him to trial for the death of Mr. Bob Ewell, who he killed to protect Scout and Jem.…

Jem's dad is defending a black man who was accused of raping a young girl in town. This is especially hard for Jem because he is growing up in a very racist southern town and time. Even though the majority of the people in the town know the black man is innocent, his color causes them to discriminate against him and accuse him as being guilty. The things Jem must experience as a result of the trial, such as getting beat up by a grown man, teach him many things about his life. He learns to give every person a chance no matter what their race, gender, or any other classifying features are. Most importantly, Jem learns to never cower down from what he believes in and to never give…

In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson is one of the witnesses that one may think is most reliable. Tom Robinson may be one of the most reliable people on the witness stand because he is not afraid to tell the truth; he is honest, nervous, and hopeful. However, one may think that Mayella is more reliable but because one may see that she is nervous and wants to fight back on ideas that she does not agree on, one might conclude that Mayella is less reliable. One key idea in Tom Robinson's testimony was that his left arm was crippled. This is key evidence because Mayella had a bruise on the right side of her face and most likely was hit by a left handed person, while in this…

Atticus believes in treating people fairly. For instance on page 100 Atticus says the reason he defends tom robinson is “I couldn’t hold my head up in town, I couldn’t represent this town’s legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or jem not to do something again”. This is an example of how Atticus treats Tom Robinson equally no matter the color of his skin by defending him like how he would defend a white man when the rest of the town will despise Atticus because of it. Also on page 39 Atticus and scout are having a…

“He’s nothin’ but a nigger-lover!” is one of the many so called inappropriate texts from one of the best-loved stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The use of the ‘N’ word should remain in the book because it describes the setting of an important period of time, and shows mind set of racist characters. It is simply used for historical recognition and not as an insult.…

Have you ever been or known someone who has been misjudged or misunderstood? The novel discusses characters who have been in a situation like that. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses Mr. Raymond, Boo Radley, and Tom Robinson to show that people believe they are evil, but rather they are just people who are victims of liars who accuse them of doing the unthinkable by misjudging them.…

Steve Jobs once said, “Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life...have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” By this, he means: don't let the voices and beliefs of others overrule yours, but instead follow your own intuition. This is exactly what Atticus teaches his children in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In the novel, Atticus shows his children that even though everyone may be against your belief or stand on something, continue to think for yourself even though others may disagree.…

Scout goes through Tom Robinson's trial thinking he must have done something to be in a trial, but the farther into the trial it gets she begins to realize it's not this man that went wrong. But it's the whole town that chooses not to see the good in him, not because of who he is, but because of the colour of his skin. She learns that everyone is equal, no matter the situation it shouldn't be based on who they are or what they look like. In the first quotation Atticus is explaining the Jem and Scout why Tom Robinson is found guilty even though he isn't. He explains how the courts are unfair when it comes to a coloured mans word against a white mans, and how it may not be right…

In this imperfect world where whites had seemed to have dominated for many decades, it is inevitable that every place would experience some form of racial discrimination. However, despite this fact, in Atticus’s opinion there is one place that should be exempted by this and that “one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a court room”. This is true as for justice to occur everyone should be treated the same way. As Atticus says through his dialogue “some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negro men are not to be trusted around women, but this truth applies to the human race and to no particular race of men”. Ironically, though people might think that a court house should be a haven for equality, in the Maycomb county people still managed to “have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box”. Even little things such as segregation of seats where Negroes are to sit in the balcony while whites happily sit on the front row benches give us the idea of the unfairness of treatment of whites to the blacks. Furthermore, the fact that “when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins” help readers understand the awful truth about racism where it doesn’t matter whether…
