Alexandra “Aunt Alexandra” Hancock is Atticus’ and Jack’s sister, married to James “Uncle Jimmy” Hancock. She has a son named Henry and a very spoiled grandson named Francis. She moves in with the Finch family for an indefinite stay and has a very strong personality. (River boat boarding school manor”) Aunt Alexandra is Scout’s only white, finch-family feminine influence. John Hale “Uncle Jack” Finch is Atticus’ and Aunt Alexandra’s younger brother. He is a doctor with no children who can always make Jem and Scout laugh.
Characteristics:
Dictator – Aunt Alexandra wants things to go her way especially when it comes to Scout. Aunt Alexandra wants Scout to be more like a girl rather than doing what Scout prefers, which is being a “tomboy”.
Injustice/Prejudiced – Aunt Alexandra judges people by their social class and background, which is not fair. She also believes the Finches are of a higher class to almost all others in Maycomb County.
Ex: Aunt Alexandra’s excuse of not allowing Scout to play with Walter Cunningham because she thinks he is trash proves how much segregation is going on already. (page 257)
Hypocritical – She loves to gossip and judge other people, however when others are caught gossiping or creating rumors about her and her family.
Idealist – She isn’t very accepting of Scout because in her mind a girl should not be running around or getting dirty. She has her own idea that should be met according to how a girl should present herself.
Ex: (page 108) “Aunt Alexandra was fanatical… year”
Caring – Aunt Alexandra wants the best for the Finch family and keep their name in the higher class. She wants to make sure the kids, Jem and Scout, grow up to be respectable adult and have the best life possible that she can give them by being a second guardian. Its hard being an only parent caring for two kids and she tries to make it easier for Atticus.
Intelligent – he went to study medicine
