Because Radley has a lot of rumours. “People said he went out at night when the moon was high, and peeped in windows. When people’s azaleas froze in a cold snap, it was because he had breathed on them. Any stealthy crimes committed in Maycomb were his work.” Their lifestyles are very different, special and incomprehensible. “The Radleys, welcome anywhere in town, kept to themselves, a predilection unforgivable in Maycomb. They did not go to church, Maycomb’s principal recreation, but worshipped at home; Mrs Radley seldom if ever crossed the street for a mid-morning coffee break with her neighbours and certainly never joined a missionary circle. Mr.Radley walked to town at eleven-thirty every morning and came back promptly at twelve; sometimes carrying a brown paper bag that the neighbourhood assumed contained the family groceries’.” They are also mysterious to the children.” I never knew how old Mr.Radley made his living-Jem said he ‘bought cotton’, a polite term for doing nothing – but Mr.Radley and his wife had lived there with their two sons as long as anybody could remember.” The children themselves are really curious." He would stand hugging the light-pole on the corner, the more he would wonder.” The house is mysterious, too. “The house was low, was once white with a deep front porch and green shutters, but had long ago darkened to the colour of the…

To Kill a Mockingbird has multiple major themes that are outcomes of significant scenes throughout the book. One of the most well-known scene is the trial scene where Tom Robinson is found guilty for a crime he did not commit. Because Scout and Jem were at the trial, the verdict deeply affected their view on the goodness of the people of Maycomb. Lee throughout the novel explores the concept of human morality, the inherent goodness or malevolence of people and how it can have a positive or negative affect on people. Lee achieves this through the coming of age and development of Jem and Scout, and through the effect that human morality has on the characterization of the mockingbirds, Boo Radley…

The first thing that I did was offer him food to give me some company. I did not just offer him any food; I offered him his favorite food. I knew that he was not going to be able to resist it so I thought that would be my best option to use in order to get him to come over. After he came over we played play satsaion and we for a long jog. Going for a long jog makes you burn a lot of calories, which makes you, hungry. Last but not leas when we returned from the jog he took a shower, which normally makes people, tired. So I had a lot of advantages over him, the first advantage was that he was hungry, the second advantage was that he was tired and the third advantage was that if he ate my food it was going to be free instead of ordering out. In the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, the residents seem to have all been infected by the same disease. Harper Lee, the author of the very famous novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, has used several ways of portraying this idea and is able to convince readers that her characters really do have some sort of ‘illness,’ an illness which affects people’s thoughts on how others should be treated. The novel highlights several issues including racism, childhood, injustice and more as Scout, the protagonist, reflects on her life in Maycomb as a child. She speaks about the inequalities of African Americans whilst explaining her thoughts about each issue. Though there are several main ideas which can be found throughout the book, this essay focuses on how characters like Francis and Bob Ewell suffer from Maycomb’s ‘Unusual’ disease, whilst Atticus and Miss Maudie oppose their views.…

This gesture helps comfort Becky during a tough and scary time. This shows maturity because he isn’t thinking about just himself and is trying to be strong even…

“The witness of the state… have presented themselves to you… in cynical confidence that their testimonies won’t be doubted [because of]... the evil assumption - that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings.” (Lee 273). This was a line quoted from Atticus during Tom Robinson's court case in To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird took place in the early 1930’s in Maycomb County, Alabama, when many people were strongly prejudiced against blacks. Atticus said this line not only to save Tom Robinson, a black man, from the wrongful verdict of rape, but potentially even some of his town from the stifling grip of prejudice. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrated that prejudice causes lack of empathy and bias; this was shown through the words and reactions to conflicts of prejudiced characters.…

It’s a sin to kill mockingbirds. That’s what Atticus told Jem when he acquired his first weapon. He told him it’s a sin to harm anything that doesn’t commit any wrong, a message the American South needed to hear desperately at the time Harper Lee was writing. In the book, the children have been relentlessly making fun of Boo Radley, but Jem soon realizes that Boo is not what their prejudices had caused them to make him out to be. He learns from this, and begins questioning his beliefs. Lee uses Jem’s experiences with prejudice to introduce the message into the story, which is a message that is also meant to influence the racist American south.…
