You may have never heard of Toxic Shock Syndrome or T.S.S. It may help to know what T.S.S. is and its causes, how to prevent it, and how to treat it.
Toxic Shock Syndrome is form of blood poisoning caused by overgrowth of Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus bacteria. Sometimes these strains of bacteria cause a toxin TSST-1. Its causes have been linked to use of tampons but it can also be caused by surgery and skin wounds. T.S.S. symptoms include a high fever, low blood pressure, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, confusion, headaches, seizures, and in some cases a rash.
Toxic shock syndrome can be deadly so here are some ways to prevent it. For menstruating women, you should use sanitary napkins or maxi pads as they are more commonly known. If you use tampons choose the correct size for your menstrual flow and change them every 2 to 4 hours. Use trusted birth control or abstain from sex to avoid pregnancy. Wash your hands often and use an antibacterial soap. If you have open wounds, keep them clean, covered, and use an antibiotic ointment. It has a rapid and dramatic onset. You will need to seek medical attention. You will need IV antibiotics and fluids to treat T.S.S. Medical staff may need to clean any infected wounds. Surgery may be necessary to remove the infected tissue. If it is caused by tampon use, immediately remove the tampon and make sure you inform the doctor of the tampon
