Training Day is a crime thriller film that gives many examples of key topics in chapter seven of sociology. Chapter seven summarizes deviance, crime, and the criminal justice system.
In the movie, several crimes are committed and deviance is formal. The film gives good examples of authority abuse and the law breaking outcomes of it. It has a variety of culture, deviance, and status within it. When I watched the film, I saw a lot of connections that related back to chapter seven. During this period, Alonzo is set above the law to get what he needs for his actions. Jake then realizes the wrongdoings of the narcotics officers and tries to do the right thing. Property crime, victimless crime, and violent crime are the crimes that are within the film.
The drama of the film unfolds for the “rookie cop” within a intense and shocking twentyfour hour training period which eventually comes to an end.
Deviance is traits or behavior that violate expected rules or norms (Benokraitis, 2014).
Deviance can vary from over time, and is culturally relative. Throughout the movie the actors showed characteristics of deviant behaviors. Deviance is formal and informal, and can range from something minor to something major. It’s anything that is unacceptable behavior and violates societal norms. In the film the behavior of all the narcotics is seen as deviant. The narcs, including Jake, all had deviant behavior when they committed crimes. All the law breaking actions that happened is primary deviance. Primary deviance is the act of breaking a law and having either minor or major offenses. Secondary deviance was also performed in the film. Jake performed rule breaking behavior in the response to others. The group he was around pressured him into the actions that he pursued (2001).
Negative sanctions happen from the beginning of the movie till the end. Negative sanctions are punishments that convey disapproval for violating a norm (Benokraitis, 2014).
Negative sanctions are informal expressions like gossip and frowns and also can range to formal reactions such as fines and arrests. Some negative sanctions that happened were bad language, beating people up, violence, throwing things, murder, stealing, and many more (2001). Deviance and crime can be dysfunctional and functional. Gangs are functional because they provide identity, belonging, and protection within the group. The narcotics were a functional group that all had the same goal in mind. They all obeyed Alonzo in performing tasks that he asked them to do. Also they were dysfunctional because they committed property crimes, created tension and insecurity, and were costly. They were costly by giving people fear, having emotional trauma, and physical injury. Jake was the main dysfunctional person throughout the movie. He went through the fear of knowing what actions were right and wrong. He had to perform law breaking actions in order to stay alive. He also was physically beat up and injured by many different people multiple times. Jake gets bumped and bruised when he was saving the girl in the alley from two drug addicts that were trying to rape her. He also gets beat up by three gang member at their house and gets a gun put to his face. Alonzo leaves Jake there for them to kill him, but they later find out he helped their cousin so they let him go (2001).
All of the crimes in the film are considered to be White collar crimes. White collar crimes refers to illegal activities committed by highstatus individuals in the course of their occupation (Benokraitis, 2014). Being a narcotics officer, your job is to work with the police force to combat illegal drugs and investigate drug distribution. In the film, Alonza, head of the
squad was committing crimes on the job. He was stealing money, murdering people, and forcing
Jake to do illegal things all for the sake of his life (2001).
Crime is a violation of societal norms and rules for which punishment is specified by law
(Benokraitis, 2014). Crime is a big part of the film and results in many deviant actions. At the beginning, a victimless crime is committed by the rookie cop. A victimless crime, is an illegal act committed where no one is harmed. Perez, the” rookie cop”, ended up smoking pcp in the vehicle. Phencyclidine, otherwise known as pcp gives off psychological dependence, compulsive behavior, and cravings. Being forced to commit the victimless crime, Jake suffered side effects from it ( 2001). Another crime that was committed was Property crime. Property crime includes larcenytheft, burglary, motor vehicle theft, arson, and more. Alonzo and Jake entered a house without a search warrant and Alonzo stole money from the house. The third crime committed was violent crime. Violent crime is when an offender uses or threatens force upon a victim, including homicide, murder, battery, rap, and more. In this case, murder was the crime that was committed. The narcotics and Perez served a search warrant by raiding the house of a friend of
Alonzo. In the search for money Alonzo killed Roger, the owner of the house, and took the money. They had made up a fake plan to explain to the police when they got there. Jake would of been scammed and the whole thing would of been on him. Another murder crime that was committed was at the end of the movie. Alonzo ends up being shot multiple times by gang members that have Jakes back in the end (2001).
Training day involves a fair amount of violence and shows how a narcotics officers abuses his power. Through this movie you learned about the streets, and the choices that will force a dedicated cop over the edge. As the movie rolls along, you learn about alonzo’s real
character and who the good cop/ bad cop is. The only thing more dangerous than the line being crossed, is the man who crossed the line. Alonzo crossed the line multiple times and made people realize who he really was. Jake on the other hand was a strong willed person and knew what was right and what was wrong. Training day, was a great movie to express chapter seven. It gave many visual examples that explained the chapter (2001).
