Transcultural nursing is defined as a legitimate and formal area of study, research, and practice, focused on culturally based care beliefs, values, and practices to help cultures or subcultures maintain or regain their health (well-being) and face disabilities or death in culturally congruent and beneficial caring ways. Having acquired the knowledge and skills in cultural competency allows the formulation of an individualized care plan that compliments the patient’s needs. This will help to meet the established healthcare goals for that patient. (Redorbit, 2008)
As Nurses are unable to have the knowledge of the attributes of all cultures, it is imperative to use a cultural assessment model or framework. Nurses should seek specialized knowledge from the body of literature in transcultural nursing practice, which focuses on specific and universal attitudes, knowledge, and skills used to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate culturally competent nursing care (Douglas et al, 2011)
Some of the Cultural assessment models that have been suggested in the field of transcultural care would be the Giger and Davidhizar’s assessment Model, Leininger’s Sunrise Model, Purnell Model for Cultural Competence, Andrews/Boyle Transcultural Nursing Assessment Guide and Campinha-Bacote Model of Cultural Competence in the Delivery of Healthcare Services.
