First semester college students battle stress, depression, and anxiety caused by the transition from high school to college. Adaptation alone is a stressful series of occurring events, and adapting to their new surrounding environment; an individual must manage problems, challenges, and demands in his or her daily life (Dyson 2). The transition from high school to a major university is portrayed as the process of growing into adulthood from youth. On top of being unfamiliar with college life, many freshmen second guess their academic abilities and whether or not they can meet the expectations of their parents. Many freshmen students rely on mom and dad for physical and emotional support. Without the help of their parents, some students poorly adjust to university life. To students currently attending college, however, the process is often stressful and frustrating. The competition for grades, the need to perform; relationships, fear of AIDS, career choice, and many other aspects of the college environment cause stress. Some stress reactions are part of deeper and more serious emotional problems, many are not and can be handled with simple counseling and stress-management techniques.
There are four primary sources of stress: (1) the environment- examples include noise, pollution, traffic and crowding and the weather. (2) Physiological- examples include illness, injuries, hormonal fluctuations and inadequate sleep or nutrition. (3) Your thoughts-examples include being unhappy and lack of purpose. Negative self-talk and wanting to be perfect at all times also contribute to increased stress. Developing a balanced lifestyle can be one of them. Stress reactions to various situations are affected by your overall level of health. Getting the right balance of sleep, food exercise, work, school and recreation is an important role in reducing stress. Discussing your problems with a trusted friend can also help reduce stress. It allows you to gain a new outlook. The act of verbalizing your concerns and putting them together will often help give you a sense of control. Last but not least relaxation techniques are extremely valuable tools in stress management. Most of the techniques like mediation, self-hypnosis and deep muscle relaxation work the same way. The Counseling Center as well as various other campus agencies offer stress management
