Jerry, the drug addict, is the first person that Trevor decides to help. Jerry is a recovering addict who has a job interview. Trevor gives all of the money that he earns, from a paper route, to Jerry, as well, a place to shower for his interview. Jerry acquires the job, but lands in jail after he spends his first paycheck on drugs. As the book goes on, you learn that Jerry saved a woman from committing suicide. Trevor sees a boy being picked on by two bullies, because of his sexual orientation. Wanting to continue paying it forward, Trevor tries to stop the bullies. By intervening in the scuffle, Trevor is killed by the bullies and later he dies at the hospital. In the end, Trevor’s project was successful, even though he died. This book was selected because it tells a great story of helping people. In the society, that we live in today, everyone is so concerned with themselves and lack caring for others. Also, when you get to college, you now have a lot of freedom to make your own decisions. A lot of times, that freedom drives kids crazy and they forget a lot of the moral and values that they have learned at home.
