WEBmd (2014), states that the need for one to pull out their hair may vary from stress, distress, relief and feeling satisfied, twirling their hair between their fingers, chewing the hair, or even eating the hair. In doing so, most results of hair pulling leave noticeably bald patches and or often covered by the use of a hat, scarf, conservative shirt, false eyelashes, and false eye brows. WEBmd (2014), also states that trichotillomania also varies in severity. In some cases the addiction is mild and can be easily corrected if confronted or noticed by others especially if the victim of trichotillomania is unaware of their actions. For other cases, the impulse of the addiction can become so strong that it can affect the person’s daily life and interrupt their daily routines and in relation, look like a tic disorder.
How does Trichotillomania become an Addiction?
Currently, the cause of trichotillomania remains unknown but has been suggested by WebMD (2014), that it is closely related to abnormalities in the brain’s pathways causing specific areas of the brain to link together. These areas include the emotional regulation and the habit formation, as well as the movement of the hair pulling, and impulse control. Trichotillomania can be hereditary and generally people who develop this addiction experience it starting around their puberty stage. According to the International Classification of Diseases Trichotillomania is a mental disorder and a behavioral disorder.

Dermatillomania, also known as neurotic excoriation, compulsive skin picking, or psychogenic excoriation, is an impulse control disorder typified by a person’s continual urge to pick at their skin. This is usually to the point where external damage is caused. An estimated 1.4 to 5.4% of the global population has it, so it is a fairly uncommon disorder. It generally occurs in women (about 85%), and onset usually begins in adolescence with the onset of acne. While it is classified as a subcategory of impulse control disorder in the DSM, a few researchers debate whether the disorder is more akin to a type of substance abuse disorder or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). There has been a recent push to present dermatillomania —and trichotillomania— as separate and distinct disorders in the DSM-V.…

Trichotillomania is the compulsive urge to pull out, and in some cases eat (Trichophagia), ones hair leading to noticeable hair loss, distress, and social or functional impairment. The term comes from the Greek words trich (hair), till (pull) and mania (madness). Francois Henry Hallopeau, a French Dermatologist, coined this term in 1889 after encountering a young male patient who tore out every hair on his body in response to an intense itch. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association classified it as an impulse control disorder; stating that it is often chronic and very difficult to treat because many individuals with Trichotillomania may not realize they are pulling their hair. Patients presenting for diagnosis may either deny the criteria for tension prior to hair pulling or gain a sense of gratification after hair is pulled; therefore, Trichotillomania is subdivided into "automatic" versus "focused" hair pulling. “Automatic” pulling meaning the patient is not aware and unable to control themselves whereas “focused” pulling means the patient is knowingly pulling and getting a sort of satisfaction from the act.…

My behavior consists of separating a small section of my hair and running both hands through it. I sometimes also take this small section of hair and twirl my hair around my finger. This is considered a covert behavior because it is observable to the public. My habit of hair twirling is an excess because this is a behavior that happens too often and needs decreased. When I begin playing with my hair, the duration is fairly short and lasts for about thirty seconds. The frequency of my behavior is about fifteen times per day. The intensity is very low; if it was not, I would be hurting myself!…
