Triple Entry Journal for “Points of Difficulty”
The Triple Entry Journal allows you to engage with difficult parts of a text in a meaningful way. Rather than avoid the difficulty by skimming over it, use this chart to confront the difficulty. Read a passage carefully and determine exactly what is confusing or ambiguous to you. Identifying the difficulty is the first step in resolving it. Since the difficult parts of a passage are often the most significant, understanding them leads to a deeper comprehension of the text.

QUESTION OR STATEMENT ABOUT WHY THE PASSAGE IS DIFFICULT
POTENTIAL MEANING OF THE DIFFICULT PASSAGE
1. “…mounting evidence suggests that these so-called solutions, based on the principle of rigid authority, are exacerbating rather than ameliorating the problems.”
Exacerbating (verb): to increase the severity, bitterness, or violence of; to embitter the feeling of (a person)
Ameliorating (verb): to make or become better, more bearable, or more satisfactory; improve
Do these tests’ and experiments’ that result in certain solutions uphold in different cultures, where children and adults get raised differently?
The evidence that provides “solutions,” those that are based on structure of a person and the belief in authority instead of being bearable they turn out to be worse and filled with violence.
2. “When controlled, people act without a sense of personal endorsement.”

“They are to use a comprehensive body of motivational research…examine the relation between autonomy and responsibility…reflect on the issue of promoting responsibility in an alienating world.”
Autonomy (noun): independence or freedom, as of the will or one’s actions
How do you promote autonomy (freedom) when our world is becoming more and more isolated due to the lack of responsibility?
When you examine certain relationships like autonomy (freedom) and responsibility you aren’t exactly sure how to endorse responsibility in a world that is becoming more and more hostile and indifferent.
4. “The paradigm called for two groups of subjects: one group would receive extrinsic rewards for solving the puzzles (a buck a piece—and a buck was still worth something in 1969), and the second group would receive no rewards.”

Paradigm(noun): a display in fixed arrangement of such a set; a framework containing basic assumptions, ways of thinking
When the topic is motivation and you arrange a different way of thinking and test it with 2 different groups where the first group receives awards and the second does not for solving a puzzle, you find that the one that gets rewarded uses that as motivation to complete the task in front of
