Support independence in the tasks of the daily living
1. HSC2007 1.1
Explain how individuals can benefit from being as independent as possible in the tasks of daily living.
The benefits from these are hat it keeps them going, they keep their skills, raises their self-esteem, makes them feel confident and encourages them to do more. For example dressing or washing just by giving them a flannel and asking them to wash their face or just hands while I am washing their feet or back and even it this for us is a piece of cake for them is a big thing and keeps their mind stimulated as concentrating to do that small task and exercises some muscles.

How does active participation promote independence?

can make them feel able and in charge of their lives.
3. HSC2007 1.3
How can daily living tasks be affected by an individual’s culture or background?
Daily living tasks may affect those depending on their culture or background, as what someone may have been brought up believing. They may have certain things that can't be done on some days of the week, and certain foods that can be eaten, for example roman Catholics only eat fish on Fridays, no meat. Also Asian ladies cannot have male carers, as it’s against their beliefs too.
4. HSC2007 1.4
Explain the importance of providing support that respects an individual’s culture and preferences.
It is important to remember that everyone has different ways of doing things, and that most of the time there is not just one right way for anything!
People almost always like explaining their own culture and a belief so asking them to tell you about their life is usually a good way to start a conversation. People usually don't take offense if they can see you are honestly trying to learn about them. Another way is to learn about different cultures by reading or visiting different areas. Some examples: if you hand something to a Japanese person, it is more polite in their culture for you to use both hands instead of just one; in Arab cultures, it is considered very rude to sit so that the bottoms of your feet point toward someone else; and in England, the "peace sign" (index and second fingers separated to make a V) made with the back of the hand pointed outwards toward another person is an extremely offensive gesture. The fact that you are interested in the first place means that you are probably already a tolerant person. Most people are uncomfortable about other cultures because they are unfamiliar with them and are made nervous by what they do not
know.
5. HSC2007 1.5
Describe how to identify suitable opportunities to learn or practice skills for daily living.
We can assess the capabilities of the individual, ask and know what he/she is interested to do for daily living, use the person self centered approach. Try doing the different skills and see what is best for the individual and take your time do not hurry as this may make the individual uncomfortable and record all of this in the task book. For example one of the resident not that long ago she was quite a independent lady but due to a fall she can’t walk on her own but can still stand with our help and a rotander. She use to prepare everything for when it was time for her morning call (chlotes, towels, breakfast stuff), lunch and tea call (buns on a plate, tea bag, frozen meal defrosted, etc) and now she feels useless not being able to do all of that and when we go in there we ask her what would she like to wear or eat and how would she likes it to be or where and you can see that it makes her happier to still have these choices even if she can’t do it herself it is done to her request.
6. HSC2007 1.6
Explain why it is important to establish roles and responsibilities for providing support.
There are going to be lots of things that need to be done, for example: pills need to be given out, people need to be washed and fed, people need to have their clothes washed, and people need to have their beds changed and so on. If you don't do this some tasks will never get done because they are less popular or people will just assume that someone else will do all the work also if you do too much just because the individual asks for it to be done, and gets used to it, maybe other carers will not agree to do that thing because they are not supposed to or it is not in the care plan or even that the individual is capable of doing it. So it is important to establish roles and responsibilities so we will not create problems for others, sometimes even to encourage individuals to be more independent and even to give the right care.
7. HSC2007 2.3
Describe how and when you would access guidance from others to resolve any difficulties or concerns about support for daily living.
I would ask for guidance and help from others to resolve difficulties every time I feel that what the residents request can put their safety and mine in danger or at risk, for example one of the residents is quite capable to move around her flat to the kitchen or toilet but has her bad days and gets stiff and can’t get up from her chair and needs assistance from us using a rotander, for this I would call my colleagues to come and help me assist the resident on to the commode as it is risqué to use the rotander on my own as I can injure myself and the resident.
For guidance I would ask every time I have concerns about things and I am not sure that what I am thinking to do is the best thing for example there is a resident in one of the buildings I work and during the night (the wake shift) she asks to see us and asks for more paracetamols even though she had the maximum amount she can have for the day and tries to persuade us to give her some more as other carers have done it before, in this case we checked the meds book and called for advice and guidance (we were told not to give her any more) and the next morning reported it to the team leader as others were indeed doing so and overdosed her with paracetamol.
8. What are the different risks to home security that could need to be addressed?
The different risks to home security would be front and back doors and windows to close/lock and open properly, key codes to be in safe place not for anyone to see and can get access to the residence keys.
