animals species, incorporating 3 of Africa’s “Big Five”, elephants, lions and leopards. Similarly, other targets include the black bear, baboons, hippopotamuses etc. According to the Newsela article “Millions of Animal "Trophies" exported across borders, figures show”, exact numbers of animals hunted are, more than 10,000 elephants and leopards, 93,000 American black bears, 8,000 lions, 9,500 baboons, 6,000 hippopotamuses, and 13,000 Hartmann's mountain zebras were killed in the last decade. As you can probably figure out, this is a grand amount of animals being killed just for showcase. All these animals are a crucial part of Africa’s ecosystems because they’re all fragments of a food chain that sustain the environment. For instance, if lions became extinct, being a predator to multiple prey species, the population of zebras, giraffes, buffalo, hippos will soar as a result of the lack predators in the area. This might not seem miserable but if herbivores such as zebras and antelope flourish they’ll consume most, if not all the plants species in environments. This will ultimately lead to the extinction of herbivores if they can’t locate additional sources of food. Trophy hunting is causing the population of various animals to plummet and if hunting continues, the animals will become extinct and damage the food chain, which sustains the ecosystem.
Trophy hunting doesn’t serve a convenient purpose, it’s cruel and the hunter’s motive is unjustified.
They just want to showcase their skills while hunting and don’t take into consideration the impact of killing these animals, instead they seek thrill and glory. It’s disheartening to know that the thousands of animals that are being killed serve no purpose and the long life they could’ve had was taken away to simply showcase their death and impress others because of the hunter’s “achievement”. To illustrate my case, trophy hunting is similar to somebody committing homicide because they want to feel superior. Unfortunately, an animal’s life is taken lightly compared to a human’s life. Animal’s and human’s life should both be equal, but some people are only concerned with people’s life despite both of us having a purpose in the world. If you take into consideration what I’ve said you’ll realize that trophy hunting doesn’t improve the world and we would be better off if it ceased to exist, since trophy hunting is a burden to the world’s
ecosystems.
Certain places where trophy hunting takes place such as Africa, have allowed hunters to kill animals for money. Specifically, an auction occured to have the right to kill a black rhino, which is highly sought after because it’s one of the rarest animals you can have in your collection, for $350,000. They justify this by saying it’ll assist poor countries such as Tanzania, and Zambia, although this is a suitable justification, the consequences of allowing this to happen should be thought about as well. As I stated previously, the extinction of these animals species is irreplaceable and it shouldn’t be taken lightly even if the money serves a good cause. Each and every animal plays a crucial part in the ecosystem and neglecting the repercussion will present an extensive dilemma that will be burdensome to repair. Trophy hunting must be put to halt, there are various ways to improve the economy of poorer countries, which seems to be their only rationale, that doesn’t involve killing animals. Trophy hunting is unnecessary, nobody needs to have a collection of dead animals to show their ¨success¨.
