I also think that Dashner was trying to get across to the reader the theme of bravery. In our story, bravery was something that the characters really needed in order to live the way they wanted. At numerous times in the book Thomas must call on his own will to overcome a frightening situation. “Two nurses- man and woman- were dragging a girl with brown hair down the hallways, and she was kicking and screaming the whole way. It was her.…

“It was not courage, exactly; the object was not valor. Rather, they were too frightened to be cowards” (pg 22). This quote perfectly embodies the view Tim O’Brien has on courage, as he eloquently demonstrates in his book The Things They Carried. Although all the characters of this novel display O’Brien’s point of view, the three shining examples of this are Norman Bowker, Jimmy Cross, and Tim O’Brien himself.…

In the novel Red Badge of Courage, Crane depicted the main character Henry as a callow youth who recently joined the Union army for the sake of his naive conception of heroism plus the quest for honor. Thus, in the beginning, Henry fought along with other comrades during the first battle. Although he bosomed the sentiments as fear and uneasiness, everything was still new to him and it left him no time to react on his guts. However, after the early round of brutality, Henry savvied right enough that the reality and cruelty of the war would eventually end his life therefore he was intimidated, and it led him to flee from the second scene.…

In the novel The Red Badge of Courage, psychological effects of war are further dealt with and examined than the aspect of physical war tactics. The book primarily focuses on one character and struggle: the protagonist Henry’s, constant battle with himself to be courageous. As the story moves forward, Henry is somewhat fighting two battles, one physical and one mentally as he strives to prove his bravery and manhood. It is commonly debated whether or whether not Henry finally succeeds and completes his pursuit for maturity and adulthood by the end of the novel. I think that although Henry’s first notions of what it means to be courageous are arguably illogical and impractical, he grows through experience and reaches maturity at the novel’s conclusion.…

Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. In Speak there are many little acts of courage by many different people but I believe the main character Melinda had the most big and small acts of courage. In this essay I will talk about why I believe she does and why I think courage is important in the ways it comes into this book. The first reason I think Melinda has the most courage is when Melinda finally said no to Heather.…

Nelson Mandela once said, "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it." He also learned that courage is the ability to stay strong through adverse situations. The characters in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird are courageous. The novel tells the story of how the Finch family overcame a predicament that emerged from racial discrimination. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is disgraced for defending a black man who is accused of raping a white woman. This causes his children, Jem and Scout, to also face hostility. Despite this animosity, the Finch family bravely confronted any crisis that arose. Courage is necessary when facing adversity because it allows one to do the right thing and defend those who cannot…

Valor is often seen as an upside to someone’s personality, but when very brave, it mistakenly leads to being brave in situations where the dispute is unfavorable. Excessive bravery leads to careless or unneeded acts, times when doing something is insane. Having too much courage results in recklessness. Courage takes over rationality, the outcome being unwise choices, which leads to consequences. In both passages the qualities of bravery leads to unnecessary risks.…

Norman Bowker had a strong feeling the death of a friend, Kiowa, in the war was his fault. He believes he could have received the Silver Star medal for saving Kiowa but has failed himself and friend. Because of his failure, he senses there is a lack of courage in himself. Once Norman Bowker was home, all he would do is drive around in circles representing him not being able to get anywhere with his thoughts. “Speaking of Courage” enforces the fact Norman feels like he cannot talk to anyone from home about the war. He believes no one will understand what he is truly going through because of the powerful disconnect. Norman goes through all the people he could talk to, but shoots all of his options down for different reasons. One option would be talking to his ex-girlfriend, Sally. This option is quickly eliminated because Sally is now married and if Norman were to say any type of vulgar word to describe what happened, she would be disgusted and ask him to stop. His next option would be his best friend, Max. Norman knew Max would be his best choice to talk to but unfortunately, Max had drowned before Norman left for the war. The last option Norman could choice to talk to would be his father. Norman describes his father as someone who just sits around and watches baseball. The reason Norman does not want to talk to his father about the war is because he is worried how he would react. The only thing Norman talks to during “Speaking of Courage” is a metal box as he is giving his food order. The metal box represents the disconnection created through war. A sense of a lack of humanity and human connection is created during this…

“‘Here they come!’” With these words the 304th regiment readied themselves for battle as the Confederate Army drew nearer, and Henry prepared himself to face his first moment of truth. In the novel The Red Badge of Courage, written by Stephen Crane, Henry struggled with the notion of what he would do once the time to fight actually came. The internal conflict between his courage and fear is illustrated in chapters 5 and 6, during his first and second battle of the Civil War. His vast difference of reactions to both battles had quite a few related causes.…
