Birthdays are a huge time investment, celebration, and important time to see someone's growth over the past years. When I turn a year older it's a new year and brand new start. By turning a year older I will help hold myself to a higher standard. I will try to be more responsible and rely more on myself. Some don't celebrate their birthdays or barely celebrate it, but me I celebrate to the fullest. Turning 16 is a huge time in an American teen. Others put more value on turning a different age, such as in Hispanic culture they put more values on turning 15.
Since my family is spilt, we have a lot of dinners leading up to my big day and after it. The day is all about me, waking up with breakfast on a tray with cute cards from my mom and step dad. They leave tiny present throughout my morning routine. I get new a new hair curler, new tooth brush, my favorite bottle of Marc Jacobs perfume, and a brand new outfit. My Nana and Papa took me to the jewelry store and told me to pick out a pair of diamond earrings, only allowing me to get them if I promised not to lose them. My parents big gift to me was the car and a Wii U. My grandpa Loren told me that the Jeep was mine when I turned 16. He then realized that having a huge mountain Jeep wasn’t the best for a daily driver. So he helped get me the Rav4, and I can take the Jeep whenever I want to. Sometimes my father Charles will send me a text saying happy birthday, But it is the best when my younger brother remembers and brings me a cute little gift of some art work he made at

The population of elderly adults is growing quickly. The oldest members of the popular baby boom generation are now over the age of 65, which means there are more seniors now than ever before in the United States. Of this age group, 43.8% are either single or widowed, and living alone (U.S. Census, 2010). Aging adults desire to remain in their own homes, and this leaves the question as to who is responsible for making sure their physical and emotional needs are being met? Many cities provide a senior community center, but are these centers able to provide support to homebound seniors who are not able to participate in on-site center activities? Cities should also focus on programs that meet the needs of homebound seniors. A senior community companionship program that makes free home visits to homebound seniors could make an overwhelmingly positive impact on their lives. A companionship program for homebound seniors should be supported as an essential community volunteer function because it enriches the lives of immobile seniors by improving their emotional and physical health, and increases their quality of…

John Steinbeck relates the history of the 1900s to the book he writes called Of Mice and Men, which is written in the 1930’s. The issue of segregation is one way Steinbeck compares the two. Another relation to Steinbeck’s life in Of Mice and Men is his job as a “bindle stiff” which means farmhand. One of the major settings in Of Mice and Men is on the farm that is believed to be referred to Steinbeck’s job. Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California. This is also where this story takes place. As you can see Steinbeck uses a lot of his own personal experience to write his fictions. Steinbeck went to Stanford, but failed to graduate from that college. His working class experience helps develop the interesting personality of the main characters in his novels. There is a significance of “dream, friendship, and loneliness” in this story.…

Do you feel underprepared for life after high school? Adult life can be daunting; from learning how to pay bills and budget your money, to applying for college. Well here’s some good news for you! Local Penn Wood alumni have created a program that is an all-inclusive ‘adulting’ workshop. The peer mentorship program aptly named ‘Life After High School’ will begin on November 14th. Meetings are held every Tuesday from 3:30-4:20 in the Bany Room at the Lansdowne Library. The seminars are intended to be “real talk” about things like partying and relationships, while also providing information and support in the college application process. Tentatively, there will be group visits to local universities and workshops to work on various aspects of…

Freshman year is the beginning of all things important and all things new. You move to a new school, you follow new trends, you make new friends. But this year for me meant time for a new backpack. I had had my last bag for a few years, and it was an unpleasant purple and dirty gray and worn down like a rag doll. Even in its roughest days of frayed straps and dirt covered bottom, I still loved it. Plus, I hated looking for new backpacks, they were all going to be cheep looking and ugly. They all look the same, usually they had three to four pockets, some had elegant designs and others were dull and colorless. They all lacked the character my bag had rightfully earned.…
