Turning Points In Ww2
The sources that I selected are the battle of midway, kamikaze attack, and the first atomic bomb blast. They describe some of the events that happen battles during World War 2, how the war ended and some major attacks. These events happen during the 1940’s in different parts of the world. They are consider major events during the war and also became important turning points for the U.S. during the war. The first primary source is The Battle of Midway and it happened in 1942. During this time the perceptions of the Japanese military was demolished by the Doolittle raid. They thought that their homeland was immune from air attack and in order to protect Japan they had to extend their defensive perimeter eastward to a tiny island called Midway. Midway was thousands of miles from Hawaii and it was where the U.S. aircraft stationed was located. The Japanese really wanted to get control of this island to protect Japan from air attack so they threw most of the imperial fleet into this battle but the Americans had intercepted the Japanese code and knew something was about to happen. Americans, they had destroyed three of the four Japanese battleships with torpedo bombers and they were drawn to sea level. The last Japanese ship named Hiryu destroyed one of the U.S. ships named the Yorktown but that same afternoon the Americans aircraft caught their ship causing it serious damage and their fleet retreated. After that lost it became turning point were the Japanese stayed only on the defensive mode. After that the American fleet started preparing for attack the Japanese discovered the American fleet and they send the order to attack but some of their ships had returned for fuel and to reload in the middle of the war so the U.S. took advantage of this and attacked them. During this attack commander Fuchida notices three black dots in the sky they were close to the ship they were hell divers so they started to react fast and started shooting at them but it was too late in a matter of seconds they started dropping the bombs from their wings. They were coming straight towards Fuchida, it was a big explosion and a big hit after that there was a flash and then another explosion bigger than the first one and then felt the shaken by a weird blast of air after that one there was another one but not so powerful which seem to mist by very little. After that the guns stop firing and the American planes were gone. The Japanese couldn’t impede the attacks from the Americans because they had tried to engage the bombs a few minutes earlier and didn’t had time to regain the right altitude. The Americans had succeeded with the attack; the Japanese couldn’t see the planes because they were covered with the clouds and only started distinguished them when they dove down to attack. Fuchida was terrified after seeing all the destruction that the bombs had cause in just a matter of seconds the flight deck with a huge hole. The fire spreading in the ship and tears spreading down his cheeks and still terrified it was for sure that the ship was going to sink. The second primary source is the Kamikaze Attack in 1944.
Kamikaze is the name given by Japan in the middle of the thirteen century when the Mongol fleet sailed to invade Japan. As they were approaching the Japanese coast some ugly winds were also approaching and smashed the Mongol ships they called it Kamikaze which means divine wind. During the world war two the Americans were moving slowly through the pacific to the Japanese islands and that’s when the Japanese called the Kamikaze again for help. This time it wouldn’t be the divine wind now it was suicidal pilots who were going to crash their planes to the U.S. ships in order to destroy them. This was Japanese weapon that the U.S. fear the most because they were sacrifing their
lives. The Kamikaze first attack during world war two was during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944 and by 1945 they were a terrifying threat and the most feared weapon during war. The most devastating attack from the Japanese to the U.S. Navy was during the battle of Okinawa were Americans suffered more damaged in a single battle. Okinawa was also the last suicide attack after the Japanese surrender. James J. Fahey said the U.S. ships were refueling when they saw a plane coming towards them at around 10:50 am when the General Quarters sounded and everyone went to their battle station. A little after that about 30 Japanese planes started to attack diving bombers and torpedoes while the ships that were reloading started to get away from tanker that was reloading them. Japanese planes were attacking from all directions but before the attack started they didn’t know that they were suicide pilots and the only thing in mind was to crash into the U.S. ships. The only way to stop the planes from causing damage to the ships was to completely destroy them and not to only damage them. Japanese planes were crashing al around the ships bombs were being dropped and machine guns were being fired they really wanted to finish the Americans. Luckily to the Americans most of the ships had dropped their bombs before impacting the ships if not the explosions would have had been bigger. Japanese planes were being destroyed by Americans and all their parts were going towards the ships “it looked like it was raining plane parts” said James while some parts of the planes were hitting a few man in the ship. They were suppose to have air coverage but the only thing they had was four P-38 which wasn’t in off f. one of the planes was going towards James and his team while they were shooting at other planes but another group started shooting at the plane and hit their wing directing to another location saving their lives. A Japanese plane crashed into one of the 40 mm but luckily for them it had already dropped their bombs causing only minimum damage. It was hard to explain all the things that were happening since everything was happening at the same time. The third primary source was the First Atomic Bomb Blast in 1945. Tested in New Mexico after spending three years planning it was called the Manhattan project. This was a very good project a secret powerful weapon created by the U.S. to attack the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Some people feared it will cause Cataclysmic reaction which will lead to destruction of the world. But after two weeks of dropping it and testing the people that didn’t seem to have any impact on them they had finally made history. General Farrell describe the there were dramatic words inside the shelter were about twenty people were concerned for the last minute changes made to firing the shot. A general called Groves inside the shelter was just with the director the one who had the idea of creating the weapon from raw materials he was trying to take him away from the negativity telling him that everything would be all right. After a while general groves decided to leave back to his station where he would get a better observation and because of their rule that him and the director shouldn’t be together in situations where there is an element of danger. After he left broadcasts were being sent by radio to the other groups that were participating in and observing the test. After the time for the test was getting closer the tension started increase between them they were going to test the unknown and didn’t know what it could really happen. Some people were praying harder than they had ever done before in case something went wrong but if it was successful than it was the success of all the Americans that were fighting in the war. In that moment in New Mexico all the effort of their brains to create the bomb became the biggest success. They were observing the tremendous light created by the explosion and the director relaxed with an expression of tremendous relief. They all started congratulating each other they knew they had made the impossible and that it will no longer be hidden as just a theoretical physicist dream. It was a weapon that could be used for good and for evil but all the ones dedicated to their creation should also make sure that it should always be used for good purposes only. They were really happy and all their emotions had been released the project had been better than what they had expected it was now going to be a new age the age of the atomic energy. Finally concerning to the war they knew they were going to ended and save thousands of American lives. After all the battles fight during the war and all the lives that had been lost during this battles it was now going to be the end of everything.
