The NL approach is more selfish than that of the SD approach, it highlights the ideology from Darwin’s belief “survival of the fittest”, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. However, the SD view it in an entirely different light, they believe that to maintain a functional society, everyone in society should help one and other, the state should intervene in crisis like poverty, provide and support struggling individuals through welfare from the state such as allowances for pension, child benefits and school grants. I disagree with the NL approach, from what I have researched it seems to be an inconsiderate approach to combatting poverty in a society. They have developed this concept that the poor should be capable of overcoming poverty through free market competition, I disagree with this idea because the individual may find themselves stuck in poverty for many reasons, a family history of unemployment and lack of education. I don’t agree with this idea because the poor may not have the same resources as the rich or education opportunities to bring themselves out of poverty through using the competition of free market. The SD approach to combating poverty is more achievable for several reasons, one being; when the state intervenes in crisis of poverty, this can provide the individual with the resources they need to get out of poverty.
