RealNetworks was formed back in 1995. Its concept is to make access easier to digital media in which end users can use an array of devices (realnetworks, n.d). Realnetworks operates with a Helix Universal Proxy, by doing so with UDP it is able to deliver packets at a quicker rate, as well as using less network overhead when compared to TCP. Normally audio and video data require large amounts of bandwidth so for this reason UDP is used to deliver media via streaming (service.real, n.d).
Microsoft as company formed back in 1975. By the early 80’s their first system MS-DOS was released. Now with a multitude of operating systems and applications Microsoft is a worldwide vendor. Like realnetworks Media player can cooperate with various protocols. UDP, TCP, and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). These protocols are used in a combination with Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) (Windows, n.d).
It appears that both digital media vendors use UDP as this provides the most effective throughput. It is not uncommon for System/Network Administrators to block UDP transmission with the use of firewalls, which means that the public internet can be awkward for this protocol. The end user can switch how it receives transmissions operating with TCP should the need be to do so (Wolfgang Kohler, 2009).
