UFDN midterm study notes

1.Old testament is Scripture. OT consists 39 books and is the Hebrew Bible. NT is 27 books = 66
TANAK (Law, Prophets, Writings) IS the Hebrew Bible. TANAK contains law which is the Torah.

2. Septuagint (LXX) – Ancient Greek Translation of the Hebrew Bible

2. At the moment of canonization (synagogue; church)- Thinks the final draft is better than first.

The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. – 100 B.C.E-100 C.E
Masoretic Text (about the time of Jesus)- All modern Hebrew Bible
Septuagint follows the Samaritan Text (accepts only first 5 books as Scripture)

3. Apocrypha = “Hidden Texts”. Western Culture did not consider Apocrypha as Scripture. A part of the LXX.

4. Textual Criticism: There are two types of composition of the Bible.
1. The earliest moment of composition. – Most textual critics go for #1 because they believe it is the real truth, establish independent by what people choose.

5. Pentateuch – Modern scholars says Moses couldn’t have written the first 5 books ALL About the Law - the Torah. Hexa – Torah + Joshua
Tetra- Torah – Deuteronomy

6. Documentary Hypothesis (modern scholar): Torah came from 4 different sources. JEDP theory.
J = Jahwist – YHWH 950 BCE
E= Elohist – Elohim 925/875 BCE
D= Deuteronomist (Deuteronomy) Late 7th century BCE
P= Priestly 6th century BCE

7. Canon – Rule of measure. Standard order of Scripture. Cannon Scripture is the order of Scripture. Proto-canon is in the times of Jesus when there was no set agreement of the canon. The community decides the canon.

8. Rabbi Joshua ben Joseph (teacher Jesus the son of Joseph) Jesus was his Greek name.
Judaism (people were set apart, observant of God’s law)– After the destruction of the temple, there were two kinds that survived:
Rabbinic  Christianity
Pharisaic  “Gentiles” – non jews. Does not believe Jesus was the Son of God.
