Whether a scan is 2-D or 3-D having a competent sonographer is key. Always wanting to point out proof of fetal life, and then showing the mother the anatomy while completing the examination. The more the mother can identify with the fetus the more the mother feels she knows her child. When a sonographer doing a bonding scan their role is to be the expert guide and to explain to the mother and family what they’re looking at. No matter what type of scanning sonographers doing whether it’s for keepsake or it’s for medical need interaction with the patient shouldn’t change; keeping the mother comfortable, calm, and informing her with what you are visualizing is what she should always experience. Interaction with the fetus on the screen is one way expectant parents begin to create an identity for their soon to be baby. Ultrasounds help the women understand the positions the fetus is in and how that correlate with what she feels inside of her.
