Those people would be right, of course there is a reason for the law. There are multiple reasons that this bogus law exists. One could argue the medical backing for the law seeing as there is a huge misconception that this law was created to maintain the health and safety of people under the age of twenty-one. By not making alcohol legal to anyone under the legal limit, they are saving many people from health issues, but when it comes to focusing on the group between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one, the medical backing for this law goes out the window. There is not enough medical evidence to prove that there is a substantial difference in a person’s development and ability to handle alcohol in the span of those three years that would justify one not being allowed to drink by law. In addition, the credibility of the medical argument is dissipated by the fact itself that tobacco is legal for purchase at the age of eighteen, when one is legally an adult. Too much of anything can be bad for a person, which is why the rule of moderation is key. Moderation with alcohol is key to being able to have a good time while not putting yourself in harm’s way. Maturity with alcohol is something that needs to be taught and for most young adults, there is never a chance for that responsibility to be learned. As a young adult, I can admit that it is always more appealing to try something that you are not legally allowed to partake in. That is just the excitement of a risk. Therefore, lowering the drinking age back to eighteen would take a lot of the excitement and risk out of it. It would turn the taboo of underage drinking into just some other thing that eighteen year olds are allowed to do legally, therefore the fun would be lost for most people.
