School lunches are almost always inadequate. More than half the students leave lunch hungry. They give choices of vegetables but when they don't taste good they'll just be trashed. If they eat eight hundred calorie meals and they only eat one fourth they only get two hundred of those calories. That's possibly for a high school student that plays three sports a year that won't be home until after six or seven o'clock.…

In a 2006 data study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it showed that 5 to 17 years old, almost 60% of overweight children had at least one cardiovascular disease risk factor (Kelleher). Having unhealthy food menu items is just going to add on to that percentage. This same factor has a ripple effect on the student because it also limits them on what various types of meals they can choose during lunch hour, a poor selection of unhealthy foods leads to poor dieting. “The reimbursement rate for a reduced-price lunch is $2.17 and 24 cents for a paid meal. When you factor in labor and other school costs, schools have less than $1 per day per student to spend on food for lunch”(C.P.F.). Limiting yourself to just $1 dollar to use towards food would be nearly impossible to survive off of, let alone to eat or choose a healthy meal. This not only limits student and young adults of what they are able to eat during lunch if they cannot afford to bring their own lunch, but it also gets them into the habit of making a poor choice in food. “Fewer than 15 percent of the two million American elementary school-aged children eat the recommended five or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables" (Myrdal). If these poor eating habits continue or continue decrease, than the obesity will only continue to grow. In order for our young children of America to begin to change their unhealthy eating habits, parents and other leaders must promote healthy eating habits and explain the importance of proper dieting, which can start by cutting back on processed…

School food is actually much worse than fast food. According to an infographic from Good magazine school lunch programs are given eleven billion dollars on average, and yet less than a third of these programs meet the recommended amount of saturated fat per meal. My own experience with school lunch, as well as many others, has been a very bad one. School lunch just does not in any way taste good. Almost every food that schools give us taste artificial and cannot be compared to real food. This so-called healthy food is supposed to refuel our brains and boost our productivity in learning. Most people do not feel this way at all after eating school food and if anything they feel more diminished. I believe that school cafeterias should be reformed…

Everyone has gotten lunch from their school before. To some, it is just easier. A student just has to grab a tray, pick out their food, pay, and eat. However, are students really getting healthy foods? If not, school lunches should be improved so students are eating healthier foods. At our middle school, you just type in your school number and tell them what you want. They then just give you the food. This means that the school has no control if the students eat healthy food. Students, instead of ordering the proper lunch, order junk food such as cookies or fruit snacks which one, wouldn’t fill them up and two, is very healthy for their diet. The school should change their lunches so kids are getting a healthy lunch.…

Remember the days of regular ranch, regular bread, and a dessert being part of a typical school lunch? Well, this is not the case anymore. Now it is low fat ranch, whole wheat bread, and sides of only fruits and vegetables. This is all part of the new schools lunch program. The government wants students to be healthier, and this is how they decide to do it. However, this is not an effective plan because it is leaving students hungry, they do not enjoy the food, and is costly. The government should not impose restrictions on cafeteria food in schools…

This percentage could be decreased tremendously if the lunches looked more appetizing and tasted better. Similarly in the article ‘Are Federal School Meal standards fit for Consumption?’ the writer says that “students are disgusted by the food provided to them”. There are many ways to fix this problem. The first thing to do would be to make the food more pleasant and appealing to the eye. Another thing would be to take the time and make quality, healthy food that students enjoy. However, in ‘Americans Actually Like Michelle Obama’s Healthier School Lunches’, the writer states how “a national poll shows that more than 80 percent of Americans support healthy school meals consisting of more fruit and vegetables and less high calorie and sodium food choices”. While many people support the idea of the healthy lunches, it does not mean they think the food is enjoyable. Overall, the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act has negatively impacted school lunches by creating low quality food, and most students…
