(7) Explain how to achieve the balance of child initiated play and adult led activities.
I am familiar with the importance of creating the right balance between adult-led and child-initiated learning so that all children have the best opportunities to learn and develop. Adult-led activities are based on our own professional understanding of what we should be encouraging children to learn and what experiences they should have. Through adult-led activities we can introduce children to new ideas, provide opportunities for them to develop their skills and ensure that they experience all the seven areas of learning throughout the “Early Years Foundation Phase”.
During adult-led learning we can feel in control of the activities we are providing. However we cannot have any control over what the children are learning from these experiences. It is important to balance adult-led activities with time and opportunity for children to explore their own ideas, play with resources and use their imagination and creativity. Through doing this and practicing the skills, children will be able to take control of their learning and be able to apply new skills in different situations.
The role of any adult in child-initiated learning is to, prepare the physical environment so children have access to a wide range of intresting open-ended resources and be able to explore and investigate imaginatively. Also to develop an emotional environment where children feel safe to share their thoughts and ideas and try things out without being afraid that they might get things wrong. It is important to manage the daily routine and ensure the children have time to follow their own ideas and develop their self-initiated play.
