For part of this task, I gathered information from a technician that works in the science department. This enabled me to gather primary information, giving me a basic understanding of the storage and practices within the lab before researching them on the internet.
Chemical store management
When storing chemicals, they are put into different categories, for example; flammables, corrosives, irritants etc. All of these different categories are stored in an external store. They are stored externally so that if there was a fire in the chemical store then it wouldn’t harm anybody or anything in the school. Within this secure external store, all the chemicals are kept in locked cabinets, again for safety. The external store then has a secure locking system so …show more content…
In the laboratory, the radioactive substances have an exposure limit which is usually 20 minutes or less. They are stored in a secure store which should be locked at all times. These substances should be handled with protective clothing such as gloves. When the substances are in use, they must be signed out of the store and dated and when they are being put back they also must be signed and dated which declares they are still in good condition.
Handling glassware
Handling glassware in the laboratories is pretty basic as there is safety rules in the lab such as no running with the glass and must be handled responsible. When the glass is being prepared, it is labelled and when it is returned it is washed and un-labelled. In the labs, there is always a glass bin which is later disposed of.
Handling solvents and poisons
When handling solvents and poisons, one main thing to do is to take advice. This can be a very dangerous procedure so protective clothing must be worn at all times and stronger gloves should be worn for handling the poisons. They are stored in containers and then kept in a flammable cupboard.
