Unit 5 Astromnomy Lab Questions
1. Why do some scientists believe that there might have been life on Mars?
Some scientists believe there was life on Mars due to a number of factors. For one we know there was at one point a substantial amount of liquid water when the planet was much younger. We also know Mars’s electromagnetic field has dampened, making it more susceptible to interstellar heat and radiation, thus eliminating the life that could have existed. There are also other several factors including volcanic activity and evidence of salt oceans.
2. Why are scientists interested in whether water was or is on Mars? What do their tests and observations suggest about the possibility of water on Mars?
Scientists are interested in whether water was or is on mars because this is the most direct clue to the signature of life. Scientist’s tests indicate most if not all water is frozen on Mars, but it was not in the distant past during which life could have existed.
3. Why do some scientists believe that life may not have ever existed on Mars?
Some scientists believe this because they say it is too far on back in the goldilocks zone. Others note the mineral composition and lack of a strong atmosphere containing proper gas elements.
4. What may have happened to the water on Mars?
The atmosphere may have been blown away over time due to the damping of its magnetic fields and thus creating frigid surface conditions freezing all liquid water.
5. What do scientists believe may have happened to leave Mars vulnerable to the solar winds?
Scientists hypothesize that the degradation of Mars’s inter core which produces its electromagnetic field that protects the planet from interstellar winds and storms.
6. Do you think life existed or exists on Mars? Why or why not? Use information from the video and unit to provide support for your reasoning.

Technology has increased fast in the past couple of years. Making research become fast and easier. Finding water on Mars has always been a challenge, but as of last year NASA has found that Mars infact does have water. “In 2015 September NASA announced the finding of what seem to be small amounts of liquid water, just…

But how could we possibly reach them, modern day space travel doesn’t even reach the moon, and we still don’t know how long humans can live in zero-gravity without permanent, adverse effects. And how might humans survive under a different sun with lashes of uncontained radiation that are common on Mars. This research will analyze the reasoning and possibilities of humanity colonizing Mars as well as the changes society might undergo having a foothold in two different planets in order to answer the questions, why do humans feel the need to colonize Mars? And how might its colonization affect our…

The red planet Mars has long been a cultural and scientific fascination. People have pondered for decades over the biological potential of the planet and its past. Geological features on Mars resembling dry riverbeds, and the discovery of minerals that form in the presence of water, suggest that Mars once had a thicker atmosphere and was warm enough to allow liquid water to flow on the surface. But phenomenally, the Mars that is seen today is radically different --- barren, lifeless, and dry. Why? In hopes of uncovering the answers to these mysteries, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will launch its newest mission to Mars, the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission (MAVEN).…

Summary: Mars' magnetic field holds apart in the solar system because that gets rotated by interactions with solar particles, a NASA spacecraft found. The Red Planet also could have missed its atmosphere through the same method. Mars now has a thin carbon dioxide atmosphere, and the force on the surface is too low for water to flow. While researcher is trying to understand. Why Mars failed its atmosphere, an increase theory is that particles running from the sun pushed the lighter molecules out from the atmosphere through the Red Planet's billion years history.…

The first planet closest to the Sun, Mercury, has a surface geology which is quite rocky, with heavy amounts of craters, boulders, and a lot of pulverized dust. It lacks in atmosphere, due to its moderate day-night variations, particularly in heating by solar energy, and its temperate weather swings as a result of that energy. Temperatures on Mercury range from low (90 Kel.) to high (700 Kel.) though, despite its many observations, it is however quite dead, and it has been for some time.…

Scientists confirmed there was liquid flowing water on Mars on the 28th of September. The water was found running down slopes in the warmer months when the temperatures were above -10℉. The water was similar to our ocean water in the way that it was salty but the salt found in the water was more like what we use to de ice the roads. There are long, dark streaks that show where the water flows because as of right now there are no streams, rivers, or lakes on Mars so the water comes from under the soil and wets the soil causing the streaks. This means although the water is slightly different Mars has an even better chance now at supporting life which we will need if NASA is sending astronauts there in 2030. This water could be used for drinking…

Some have suggested the possibilities of other planets being able to sustain life and scientiests have been questioning data thorougly to test the chances of another source of life on them. Perhaps these planets or masses are outside our solar system. They could lie thousands of light years away on a different side of the universe. However, Mars has been labled as a prospective planet that could sustain life. This theory has been…

The discoveries of water on Mars has been a factor of the theories of inhabitants on Mars. The theory of life on Mars was first created by Giovanni Schiaparelli in the nineteenth century. He saw these long streaks on the surface of the planet. He called these streaks,”canal”, meaning channels in Italian. Later in time was later called canals. Since of the change to canals, people thought that some form of life created the canals. The well-developed canals question many scientists if it was an act of nature or if inhabitants formed these canals. Either way, scientists are amazed on how these canals were…
