Title: Finding Your Own Identity: Using “EARLIEST DAYS; Takeoff! How the Wright Brothers Did What No One Else Could,” by John Noble Wilfred and “The Road Not Taken,” by Robert Frost to discuss Laurence Yep’s Dragonwings.
Unit Summary: This unit will be used to cover Dragonwings, a novel by Laurence Yep. In order to cover the novel, students will also read “EARLIEST DAYS; Takeoff! How the Wright Brothers Did What No One Else Could,” an article by John Noble Wilfred and “The Road Not Taken,” a poem by Robert Frost. To introduce the novel, students will read and analyze an article about the Wright brothers. Students will then discuss their own goals and dreams and the importance of the Chinese culture before reading Dragonwings. Finally, after completion of the novel, students will make connections between the novel, Dragonwings, and the poem, “The Road Not Taken.”
Reading Tasks: Lesson one starts off with students silently reading “EARLIEST DAYS; Takeoff! How the Wright Brothers Did What No One Else Could,” an article by John Noble Wilfred. Then, students will follow along as the teacher reads the article aloud. The teacher will ask the students a set of text-dependent questions. Lesson three starts off with students silently reading “The Road Not Taken,” a poem by Robert Frost. Then students will follow along as the teacher reads the poem out loud. The teacher will ask the students a set of text-dependent questions.
Vocabulary Tasks: The teacher will provide a nonfiction text and a poem to highlight strategic and commonly used words. Rather than providing the students with the answers, the teacher will encourage students to look for meaning within the context of the passage.
