Universal Pre-K Classroom Observation
General Information I went to a universal Pre-k class in Amityville. The day was February 17, 2017. I got there at 10:30 AM and I left at 2PM. The children were four years old turning five and some of the kids were already five.
Staff
There were two teachers in the class I observed who are everything a child needs. There’s 18 kids in the class. There are more girls than boys the ratio is 13:5.
Activities
When I got to the class it was center time. They had many different centers going on that kept the kids active. They had reading time that was introduced for the first time today, they had painting which included the smocks and easels. Being there I witnessed activities like; play house, veterinarian, mother and child/family.

The classroom is a rain forest and has trees and monkeys painted. The teachers also decorated the walls with the children’s artwork.
There are three tables that are three different colors: red, blue, and yellow. There are different centers; math center, block area, writing center, puzzle mat, science center, art center, music center, cubby center, and library center. There’s also a sandbox that’s for sensory activities. The classroom is nice and big and it’s easy for everyone to move around. Walking around the classroom everything is labeled, in the block area there are pictures of the shapes of the blocks and what shelf it belongs on. They have the art area labeled and everything is organized. The cubbies are at a height the children can take objects from, and the library has an area kids can sit down and there’s a variety of different books. “Teachers place books in an inviting, comfortable library area and in other places conducive to their enjoyment and use.” (Brederkamp, 2009, p. 167) There’s a poster that has the centers on it and they put the kids into groups. Each group had a colored clothes pin, whatever center the child was at they put the clothes pin

During lunch time, all the children know to get their lunchboxes and sit down at their group tables. The food is all healthy and During centers the teachers do small group reading and they also do reading during circle time. While the main teacher was doing reading Personal Reflections I went to the school thinking that the kids were going to be all over the place, but I was wrong. The teachers are friendly and they allow the children to learn on their own. I never been to a preschool or around younger kids that act as well as this class did. The kids know their colors, number, cooperate with peers, know how to read, etc. The kids listened well during transitioning time, but that class size looks like it’s too big for just two teachers.
The classroom is beautiful and has enough space for all 18 kids to move around freely. I love how the classroom doesn’t have a television. What I would change about the program is the amount of kids in the class. The day I had my observation the children couldn’t go outside since it was after the big

I observed Mrs. Ball’s 7th grade science class at Helen Tyson Middle School on Thursday November 5, 2015. The classroom had a great climate and was decorated with interesting scientific educational material. She had the desks set up in organized rows with two kids per table. This set up allowed for less interaction between the kids because they were so spaced out, which seemed to keep them on task. The dynamics in the classroom were great. She connected well with each student and was interested in what they had to say. She was very in control of the class and the students seemed to respond well to her. The students interacted pleasantly with one another and were were all very welcoming. They came into class, sat down, and got right to work.…

Upon arrival to school students may choose to eat breakfast or students may choose which center they want to explore for an hour. After free time one of the teachers reads Bible stories and sings worship, praise, and inspirational songs with the students. The next step in this journey is Circle Time. Circle time consists of singing, recognizing, and identifying classroom rules, the calendar, days of the week, and the months of the year, weather, the seasons, shapes, colors, numbers, and alphabet. After Circle Time, it’s time for morning snack. During morning snack, the students may choose a snack provided by the school or a snack provided by their parents. Music plays softly in the background as the students are encouraged to communicate with friends. One of the assistant teachers, places the student’s on a line to go to the bathroom; this line is called the “Bathroom Bus”. Another assistant teacher sets tables with marker and worksheets. She also sets out three easels with paint and paintbrushes. The students in Group A trace, with a marker, lines that go across the page. The students in Group B paint lines across the page. As the students come in from their bathroom break, the teacher then invites them to join her on the rug. She uses this time to talk to the students…

There is a desk and chairs for children who wish to sit and read there and this area is also used for one to one reading sessions. There is also a soft seating area with pillows and cuddly toys so that children can relax while enjoying their book. There are a variety of books for the children of all abilities and cultures to enjoy. The book corner helps to promote children’s language development and fine motor skills development. It also supports their social and emotional development as they sit with friends sharing stories and at times playing ‘being the teacher’ where they pretend to be the teacher reading the story to the children using facial expressions and changing the tone of their…

Today many public schools have pre-kindergarten programs. The children in these programs come from different experiences, backgrounds, and all have different needs. Pre-kindergarten programs give children an advantage to learning prior to kindergarten. I performed my second filed observation at Pinkston Street Elementary School in Henderson, NC. The elementary school is in a rural county and this school has lots of diversity in which there are African-American, Caucasian, and Mexican students. The classroom that I observed is one of four pre-kindergarten classrooms in the school. The elementary school is also one of three of the schools in the county to require…

The first hour and a half I spent observing Mrs. Ballardo kindergarten classroom. The type of lesson that I am observing is Math Cooperative groups and the objective that is being worked on in this lesson is that the students can show that they know the numbers by counting dots on a die. When walking into the classroom I immediately felt like this was a class that promoted learning. It felt so welcoming, and the mood of the children were great they were all sitting on the rug and ready to learn. The classroom is arranged with the five tables. When you first walk into the classroom there are two…

    Class Size Matters!

One of the most important parts of an effective education is the learning environment. The factors of the learning environment have a lot to do with how a student feels and how well they’re able to communicate with their teacher. Are they able to ask questions or is the class simply hurried along because so much needs to be covered and there isn’t nearly enough time to stop for every question? A big factor in creating an adequate learning environment is maintaining small class sizes. Class size has been a continuing problem in LAUSD in recent years due to budget cuts, but should the students suffer because of lack of funds?…

I set up an appointment with the Kids Club daycare at 9:45 am on November 4th to observe for an hour of toddler classroom who were between three and four years old. The principle gave me a warm greeting and took me to the class and introduced me to the teachers and the children. Everyone there made me feel welcomed. I chose a place where I can sit, observe and write my note as well as to be away from children's sight. In the classroom there were five boys, two girls, and two teachers Ms. Nadia and Ms. Emma. The classroom itself was large and spacious. The classroom is very appropriate for children this age and it has many interesting areas such as a blocks and art area, and children taped some of their previous work in the art area. The color of the class is bright and has interesting posters like calendars with the name of children’s birthdays. Also. There is a toys area that has toys suitable for both boys and girls like cars, animals, and doll. There is a reading area with a little amount of children’s books and stories in reachable…

Also, I found it very surprising some of the school didn’t have any supplies for learning. Such as computers, crayons, paper, and books. It made me realize how fortunate we are to have all the materials we do here. On average, teachers spend $500-1500 dollars a year on their own classroom and materials, which I find crazy seeing as that shouldn’t be their responsibility. All students deserve to have equal learning opportunities as kids at any other school. It isn’t fair some kids have a computer in every classroom, when other students have never even touched one.…
