Urimary tract infection

I decided to choose tremethoprim 50mg/ 5ml suspension as the antibiotic I would look at. I chose suspension as this is often prescribed where I work as often patients find it easier to swallow. Trimethoprim is indicated for the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI ) in adults and children.
Most UTI s are said to be caused by bacteria that live in the digestive system. Most urinary tract infections (UTIs) are caused by bacteria that live in the digestive system. If these bacteria get into the urethra they can cause infection. It’s thought that the bacteria can spread to the urethra via the anus. NHS UK (2013) E coli is a Gram-negative (does not stain purple ) anaerobic, (need little or no air to grow)
Pharmacokinetic properties
Trimethoprim is absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract and peak concentrations in the circulation occur about 3 hours after a dose is taken. About 45% is bound to plasma proteins. The half life is about 10-16 hours. 40-50% of the dose is excreted unchanged in the urine within 24 hours. the experience and knowledge as well as the confidence to act on intuition may be important. I work in a nursing home for older people and many of them have a degree of dementia. Intuition is probably used daily by staff in making decisions for clients who cannot make them for themselves with things like washing and dressing or could this be more related to treating someone as you would like to be treated yourself. I am not really sure about this. Intuition may be based on common sense and affect how a person would act in an emergency situation. I use intuition daily an example being when one of the residents displayed behaviour that was not normal for this person becoming confused and agitated my intuition told me that this person was suffering from a urinary tract infection.

Trimethoprim is used to treat infections that are caused by bacteria. It works by killing the bacteria by preventing it from producing folic acid. This makes it impossible for the bacteria to multiply in the body. I sometimes have the occasional intuition and may also have a strong feeling that I should carry out a certain intervention. Most of the time it works out to be the right choice and I am happy with the result. Sometimes however I may not trust the hunch or feeling. and talk myself out of acting on it in case it is the wrong thing to do.
Bacteriuria - this refers to the presence of bacteria in the urine.
Urinary tract infection (UTI) - this implies the presence of characteristic symptoms and significant bacteriuria from kidneys to bladder. Many laboratories regard 105 colony-forming units per millilitre (cfu/ml) as the threshold for diagnosing significant bacteriuria.
Lower UTI - this is generally considered to be infection of the bladder (cystitis).
Upper UTI - this includes pyelitis and pyelonephritis.
Recurrent UTI - this may be due to relapse or re-infection.The number of recurrences regarded as clinically significant depends on age and sex.
Uncomplicated UTI - this refers to infection of the urinary tract by a usual pathogen in a person with a normal urinary tract and with normal kidney function.
Complicated UTI - this occurs where anatomical, functional, or pharmacological factors predispose the person to persistent infection, recurrent infection or treatment failure - eg, abnormal urinary tract.
Between 52% and 90% of men with a UTI have been reported to have prostatic involvement
