Gender is represented in the media constantly by using stereotypes and conforming to hegemonic states. Representation is the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way. Women are commonly displayed as being stay at home mums who depend on their husbands.
Within the Katy Perry dark horse music video, women are portrayed as being strong and independent. The low camera angles support this as the audience are seeing her as large and almighty. The wolf of Wall Street also supports this idea of women fending for themselves, only in particular scenes such as when Leonardo’s wife finds out he was with another female last night and spoke her name within his sleep. She illustrates she is in power by throwing water over him. These pieces of media contradict to the hegemonic state that men are in power.
Contrasting to the scenes where Katy Perry is portraying herself as an independent and powerful woman, she later changes into more revealing clothes when the rapper Juicy J appears. This supports David Gauntlets theory as there are contrary scenes within the piece of media. Wolf of Walls Street also conforms to this theory as there are contrasting scenes of how women are portrayed. The women in the film are most commonly represented as powerless and seen as a sexual object; an example of this is when Leonardo is engaging in intercourse with his wife and she does not want to partake in this. As a result of her not satisfying his sexual demands is she is hit a handful of times. This scene portrays a negative representation of both men and women. Men are shown as aggressive and women as weak. These scenes reinforce the hegemonic state that men are in power. The TV show dapper laugh also portrays men in a negative way. However, this show is supposed to be comical and ‘light hearted’.
The gender representation within the Reebok-Reetone tricycle advert is mainly negative of women.
