On November 5th, 1605, the people of London celebrated the escape of their king from an attempted bombing called The Gunpowder Plot. A man named Guy Fawkes was in charge of the gunpowder stocked underneath the House of Parliament. Fawkes and his allies tried to destroy the government by destroying Parliament and the King because they did not agree with the views. Fawkes was found, questioned, and hanged. In the movie version of the comic V for Vendetta a freedom fighter called V tries to demolish the fascist regime of Great Britain’s government. V’s goal is to show the people of Britain that they can learn how to define themselves by comparing themselves to others to evaluate their own beliefs. V uses Guy Fawkes as his inspiration for the entire setup and execution of his plan to promote his argument against controlling the fascist government. V uses a social comparison to Guy Fawkes in his timing, reasoning, language, and appearance to make his argument more attainable and understandable for his audience, ultimately making his argument effective. Similar to the government, V uses fear to gather people onto his side. On the original Guy Fawkes Day the government did not tell the people of Britain why Fawkes was rebelling, but only told them that Fawkes was planning on mass destruction and killing the king. On the fifth of November in V for Vendetta both sides of the battle use fear of the other side to persuade the audience why they are correct. V makes a speech on BTN, reminds the viewers of “the cruelty and injustice and oppression” which the government creates that the people currently endure. V creates a sense of fear in the people of staying the same and forever being controlled by a fascist country opposed to the benefit for changing; the whole country would be liberated and individuals would have the right of choice. Although V purposefully creates a sense of fear in the public, he does intend to not create a sense of anger. V chooses what evidence he does not present to the public, including presenting the government’s framing of the bioweapon attack on terrorist organization. V does not present large wrongdoings of the government because he does not want the people turn their hatred towards someone else instead of using their power for good.
