Vark Learning Style Analysis
Learning Styles and Theories There are multiple learning styles and theories that apply to individuals in multiple ways. The VARK learning style that my analysis revealed is read/write according to the questionnaire by Fleming (2001-2014). This categorization of my learning style compliments me well and I definitely agree that actually seeing the information spelled out in front of me allows me to better understand the information. The two learning theories that relate to my VARK learning style are behaviorism and constructivism. Behaviorism focusing on a clear goal with an automatic response and constructivism affording me the ability to problem solve. Being an andragogical learner I’m able to apply what I’ve learned during my pedagogical …show more content…

Falling into andragogical learning realm I have more experiences and therefore I can apply those experiences while learning. Adult learners take on the responsibility to be self-directed, and have a wealth of experience that enables them to transform information into meaningful cognitive and reality-based applications (Minter, 2011, p. 9). In retrospect the pedagogical concept requires the instructor to be more directive, placing students in a more passive role, and that students don’t have the motivation or maturity to be self-directed learners (Minter, 2011, p. 9). Applying active learning concepts such as reading and writing allows me to actively be categorized under the andragogical concept. Moreover, by writing and speaking the words to myself and reflecting to solve problems I’m practicing the concept of self-directed and problem-centered aspects of andragogical learning. Therefore, I will be able to apply my VARK learning style to complete my educational endeavors and continue on my path of …show more content…

I feel that we cannot generalize that a student will be classified solely under one learning style, they will adapt and apply what is more appropriate given the information or circumstances. The learning theory used depends upon the learning situation. Being identified as an andragogical learner I’m able to apply life experiences, need to know, relevance of the subject matter and how it applies to me, and use my motivation to further my educational goals with the guidance of instructors that are more like facilitators. Malcolm Knowles paved the path for educators and students alike that entail specific learning principles to enable learners to thrive educationally and without his significant contribution who knows where we would be

By definition, “It is the act or process of gaining knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught, or experiencing something” (Merriam-Webster.com, 2014). One assessment in particular is called VARK: a guide to learning styles and it can be used to assess an individual’s learning style. “VARK, which is used for learning information, is a four modality acronym that stands for the Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic” (Fleming, 2014). This paper will review each aspect of the evaluated learning style compared to the preferred learning strategies of such an individual and determine if any changes are needed to make learning accessible and more efficient.…

How an individual understand information and use them to solve complex problems are mainly influenced by his or her learning style. Basically, when you can learn about how you learn, you can study and absorb information much more effectively. In 1987, Neil Fleming who has dedicated his life to explore teaching and learning, developed a popular model called VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/write and Kinesthetic) to show that there are many ways an individual can learn effectively. “VARK is a questionnaire that provides users with a profile of their learning preferences. These preferences are about the ways that they want to take-in and give-out information. ( Fleming, 2011) When we can learn about who we really are by knowing our preferences, we can reflect internally of what we can do to make a positive change for a better learning result. This paper will explore and analyze the scores received from VARK questionnaire which help identify learning styles for Tanida Maselli. It will also further investigate and compare the preferred learning styles and identified learning styles which influence teaching and learning.…

VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, Kinesthetic) analysis of learning styles was developed by Neil D. Fleming in 1987 in an effort to assist learners to assess their own style of learning (http://www.vark-learn.com/english/index.asp). Fleming’s contention is that education will be more effective if the learner understands how they learn best and seeks education programs that cater to their preferred learning style (Fleming & Mills, 1992). Awareness of the different learning styles can also help people in understanding each other and engaging in more constructive…

After taking the VARK learning styles questionnaire, I was defined as a kinesthetic learner. Kinesthetic learners take in information best by practicing using the information. This often involves physical activity, which is why most athletes are kinesthetic learners. I feel that the learning style assessment accurately described the way that I learn best. I do not gain much from just sitting in a lecture, but from actively engaging in the course material. Therefore, it is a valid claim that I am a kinesthetic learner.…

There are several methods used to determine learning styles. “A learning style is, rather, a description of a process, or of preferences. Any inventory that encourages a learner to think about the way that he or she learns is a useful step towards understanding, and hence improving, learning” (Fleming, N., & Baume, D., 2006, p.4). . One of the most commonly used learning styles is the Fleming VARK model. VARK stands for visual, auditory, reading and writing and kinesthetic learners. This model focuses on the best way for a student to learn and retain new information based on sensory modality. “The only perceptual modes, or senses, it does not address are taste and smell” (Thomas, H. F., Shah, A. J., 2007). When a student knows his/her learning style preferences, he/she is able to learn more effectively and store and recall the information being taught. My learning style was identified as multimodal, consisting of auditory and reading and writing preferences. In the past, I have mainly used reading and writing as the way to learn. According to the VARK analysis I now have to incorporate auditory learning in order to efficiently and effectively learn new information better.…

Fleming developed an inventory designed to help students learn more about their individual learning preferences. Fleming’s VAK model identified three learning styles; Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic. According to this theory most people have a preferred learning style however some people may prefer to learn using a mixture of all three styles. As with the previous theories each style within the VAK model has individual characteristics based on their learning preferences. Visual learners learn best through seeing. They think in pictures and have intense mental images. They like to learn using maps, charts, pictures or videos. They tend to have visual skills in activities such as reading, writing, puzzle building, interpreting charts and graphs, and painting and have a good sense of direction. Auditory learners like to learn through listening. They tend to think in words rather than pictures and learn best through lectures, discussions, talking things through and hearing other people’s opinions. Auditory learners tend to have highly developed auditory skills and are generally good at speaking and presenting. They demonstrate these skills through speaking, listening, storytelling, explaining, understanding the syntax and meaning of words, remembering information and analysing language usage. Kinaesthetic learners learn best through moving, touching and doing. They find it hard to sit…

Everyone has their own preferred way how to learn, when to learn and what is learned. It has been noted there are four main ways, or styles of learning, visual, auditory, read/write and kinesthetic. These styles are represented by the title VARK. VARK is actually the questionnaire which people can use to determine which learning method they prefer. Whether a person’s style of learning is identified or not, the importance is that individuals realize what works best for them. This preferred way can be utilized in a classroom, as well as in a boardroom or conference room at work. This paper will explain briefly the four learning styles and an in-depth analysis of the kinesthetic style, the preferred style of this writer.…
