In ‘And Then There Were None’ by Agatha Christie Vera Claythorne is proven guilty of the crime she was accused of committing. Vera Claythorne is a former governess who Lombard describes as ‘a bit schoolmistressy.’ She is invited to Soldier Island to serve as a secretary for Mr. Owen. Throughout the novel, Vera shows signs of guilt for the crime she has committed and even becomes slightly hysterical in situations.
Some might relate to Vera, the way she carries the weight of her crime like a burden and constantly thinks about it. She is portrayed as a selfish character who let an innocent child die to save her self image. Miss Claythorne is frightened and overwhelmed by her guilt. In fact towards the end of the book, Vera is the “last” one
